 You mean sugarcane, right?

 The canes do make for a good wall material. With torches near then it makes a very nice glowy green from a distance.

 And anybody with a server, planes mod and the sky generator. We gotta make this happen.

Anyway, plan: build everything vanilla first, then, go back in and retrofit with modded materials, like actual bamboo and dyed stone.

Yes Minecraft is still fun by yourself without mods, especially on a server. But you should really consider some of the mods out there, industrial craft is an especially fun one.

Right now, all I have is modloader, too many items, and shelves.

In the end though, before 1.6 came out I had reverted to just having the water and texture improvement mods and the random long grass mod.

I was thinking of doing something that just adds a more complete range of building material by dying smooth stone, cobble, and wood.
Easy to implement and would add a lot of variety.

I believe somebody made a block dying mod where it uses the metadata wool uses to color any block. I dunno if it updated and where it is, but it's out there. Hopefully you can do a better job at it yourself.

I believe that Super Slopes uses the damage value metadata as a material selection, but that mod also adds more block shapes, so it might not be the one you're talking about.

I'm leaning towards the smooth on this one, but those damn division lines make it hard to choose between it and the wood.
Cobble is okay, but I think it has the wrong feel for a roof.

Smooth looks best to me, the wood clashes a bit with the walls.
