This would make the best cobblestone factories.
Automated cobblestone, just add Redstone!

Also, pistons + shock absorber = Player Launcher (for fast travel)?

I made a chainsaw, and the first thing I do is smash my window :3

Also, I have found the most amazing cave: it's huge, has almost all kind of minerals (except for redstone, gold and diamonds), has water, has magma, has water and magma right besides each other, and it's so huge that not only I got lost, but also wasted both my drill and my iron pick. Heck ya!

Remember that pistons can only launch you around 8 blocks or so unless Notch really powers it up, so that's quite the iron investment. For lateral movement minecarts would be best, but to replace the now broken watervator trick this would be handy.

Pistons could be made into a cool elevator system, albeit one that works in a very strange manner and has no ability to allow one to travel downwards (but that's what a long shaft with a single block of water at the bottom is for).

Basically, you'd be catapulted upward by one piston, then a sideways piston on the floor above would close, operating like a trapdoor used in reverse to break your fall. Then another sideways piston could shunt your over to another upwards-facing piston to travel up another level; or it could simply push you out of the way to make room for those below you; or you could have a combination of both to allow people to get off at a certain level depending on what button they pressed.

May have missed it but I'm finally trying out IC. Is there a handy IC wiki anyway?

I have an uncharged drill. What now?
Well, it depends. If it's fully empty, you can junk it, because fully emptied tools have some weird code the IC guy hasn't found a way around, IIRC, and if it's mostly empty, you can either make a mobile charger, and stick a battery or a stack of redstone in it with your drill, or you can put the drill where batteries normally go in a generator.
No, batteries and a mobile charger work fine for fully uncharged tools.

It's just the batpack that doesn't work with fully uncharged powertools.

And MFEs.  Putting them in a MFE or generator used to charge the tool but it turned out that it discharged all of the MFE's stored power charging the tool over and over, so that got disabled.

Darvi, build yourself a mobile charger, they're really cheap.  2 redstone, 1 (refined) iron, and 10 cables @ 7.5 rubber, 3.75 copper or

.

(Anyway, don't junk it, you can use it to craft an autominer someday.)

Somebody's working on one, but won't make it public until it's done.  (Which is not my understanding of how wikis work, philosophically.)

There's various minor guides, but they tend to be both incomplete and buggy.

Is there at least a good starter guide then, and a list of crafting recipes?

Well, technically... (although it admittedly requires fairly careful positioning.)  ;)

But yeah, pistons won't be replacing minecarts for lateral movement. Pistons are, what 6 iron each (plus 1 redstone), the same cost as 16 tracks. So, unless you can move at least 16 tiles horizontally per piston, it'd be less cost-effective for any reasonable distance.

...although, for short distances, it does save the trouble of finding a minecart and/or setting up a cart return system. And you don't need booster sections, either...

I did not know this but this explains a lot.

http://www.minecraftforum.net/viewtopic.php?f=1020&t=268825&sid=a3ffdd7f9b9362672e7fc3a7ee3b7566

Apparently, ore distributions are slightly messed up. SW of spawn has the highest (unbugged?) concentrations of ore, while NE of spawn has the least.
This was noticed on my friends SMP server too. He lives NE of spawn and has trouble getting ore compared to my location in the SE. Nobody lives in the SW though.

I ran cartograph on one of my own maps, this does seem to be real. It's quite noticeable for iron.

Huh, I recall somebody mentioning that somewhere quite some time ago.  I had assumed it had been fixed by now.  Guess not.

Yeah, it kinda figures that wasn't going to be an original idea. It was pretty cool to see it implemented, though; thanks for the link.

Anyway, when/if Piston Mod is added to vanilla Minecraft, it'll be interesting to see it's impact on multiplayer servers and adventure maps.

I'm currently broadcasting my heavily modded game over at the new old Jaycast.
Link in my signature.
I could use some ideas of what to do, because I'm a bit stumped at the moment.

Not skilled enough to catch a moving minecart after pushing it? Piston pusher. Place it at the beginning and end of your track. Have a button right next to the piston to save on redstone, and so it auto-resets.

We can always come up with other piston-related tricks that involve other Minecraft elements, like I mentioned with the minecarts.

Piston TNT cannons can make excellent "outside influence" cinematic effects if/when done right. Airships or nearby pirate ships?

I linked some YouTube videos from MCmodShowcase a while ago. He (She?) does a lot of cool mods and has two videos doing all sorts of stuff with pistons. www.youtube.com/MCmodShowcase and then see Pistons and Pistons part 2 in the sidebar.
