FPS on my laptop sucks. I get ~20 FPS on small rendering, 50 on tiny. 10 on normal is annoying, and 5 on far is only for screenshots.

Anything I could do to remove this little problem? I've got all the mods that increase FPS, but its still an issue. Overclocking probably isn't viable or possible on my stock laptop, unfortunately. AFAIK, of course.

Hey all. Known about minecraft for a while, but didn't really get into it until about 2 weeks ago.

Now I have built The Skywalk:

Spoiler: start of the walkway (click to show/hide)
Spoiler: view from the far end (click to show/hide)

It's certainly not finished: I'm building to a point above where friends have built their stuff. Not sure what then... turn it into a sign?

My cathedral is taking so long to build. Just one small wall segment takes about 20 smooth stone, 30 glass, and about 120 cobblestone. It's an L shape that has 15 or so of these segments. This is entirely for just the outer wall of the first floor. No flooring, interior walls, stairways, interior or exterior balconies, or the second story.

I know. But some variation is nice in the looks. Cobble is one of those things that is nice in small quantities.

I agree. I often use around three different materials in my buildings (primary, secondary and trim), which makes them interesting to look at.

I haven't made use of much cobble, but I can definitely see where it can be used as trim.

I just got this game.  I have to say: It's awesome.

I haven't even touched multiplayer, yet.

Trim is always good. It adds interestingness to a smoothstone wall, breaks up the static-looky-ness of pure cobble, puts a solid spot in a purple obsidian blur.

Different materials have different uses. Sandstone looks better for building most structures, perhaps more so because it's something of a bitch to gather, being more expensive than glass. Used sparingly, cobblestone can look better, but not for large structures due to the optical effects of tiling such a bold pattern. I don't care for smoothstone when it's not a natural cliff face (or, in a particularly egregious example, part of the giant, magma filled trench I blasted with hundreds of TNT blocks (edited in) to seal off the uneven side of the valley I was attempting to secure (complete with magma trenches inside to light it all up), which looks like a blasted hellscape).

Well, I have a 2x2x70 smooth stone base for my wall. Then, on the inner part of the smooth stone, it is a solid expanse of 15 tile high cobble stone, except for the windows (a 5x5 square, minus the corners) which are three tiles down from the top, with four tiles between each window. I've got a smooth stone ledge that runs on the outside of the highest cobblestone block. At the gaps between the windows, I extend out the smooth stone base, so that one can walk entirely around the sandstone pillars and arches that run up to the ledge. I also have log juts at regular intervals on the fourteenth tile up, that go completely through to make rafter beams. I know how to make it pretty  ;).

I probably should have used something other than cobblestone, but fuck it I use a texture pack now that makes it not look terrible.
