The main portal I use which warps me correctly from the world to the nether and back without randomly spawning new portals does exactly that. I always show up facing the frame if I walked in facing the portal 'mouth'.

The one I got happened to be reliable too. It was just oriented wrong.

Could always try dropping some redsand on a lighter colored cobblestone or something.  The sprite is always oriented in a particular way.

In the branches of the + shaped sand there's a 2 pixel wide spot with transparency in the north and west branches of the +.

...it's hard to explain, it seems the minecrafters figured that out too, it's mentioned here.  It even has a picture for reference.

I have started colonizing hell, though it's been only through means of building small biomes, so far desert and a small grass area, I'l probably put a tree in it and some water, dirt and sand are in with cactus and artificial lighting.
I am contemplating harvesting some yellowstone for lighting in a different section.
I did have to cheat in 1 grass tile though.

Can't place water in hell.

By INVEditing in the water block itself, you can.
On an unrelated note, check out the scale difference between the Overworld and the Nether in practice.
Spoiler: TALL IMAGE (click to show/hide)
That middle portal popped out on top of one of my existing roads.
That was mega-convenient.

EDIT: This also just confirmed that portal orientation means nothing, as the top portal was "sideways" on the map in the Nether, but aligned with it in the Overworld.  Carry on.

Did anybody else have their saves wiped on the update? I had a massive mine in one of my saves, now it's gone. It generated a pretty cool world though, so it isn't too bad. Going to take a while before I can find magma to make obsidian though.

Also, has anybody else noticed a larger amount of cliffs than there used to be? Not necessarily on the edges of biomes, but there seem to be a lot more cliffs.

That means either the server is down/lagging or your comp/internet is shit.

Right now it's the former. We're upgrading to a new server by Christmas, so we should be better then.

The halloween update server software is horribly unstable.  I would recommend not trying to host a server right now.
save-all, which you essentially need to run on a regular basis, causes the server software to stop responding for 15-30 seconds at a time.
It seems fine except stupid lagspikes due to a
comp/internet is shit.
but save-all seems to be fine for me. (except bit of lag due to the shit computer).

What the hell? I found a creeper in one of my well-lit tunnels. Shortly after spotting it, it exploded and wrecked my mining shaft. >:(

The exact same thing happened to me yesterday, notch did say the deeper you go the more light you need in your tunnels and since my tunnel had 3 blocks between each torch and was at bedrock level I didn't think it was worth posting about.

Well my first encounter with the nether was fun.I had a nice little house with a very nice cavern below the hill it was on, i also had an underwater tunnel made of glass, that's where i placed my portal.I come in after five seconds i hear horrible screams and run back in fear.Then after watching solifuge's video i man up and enter again, immediatley i realize that my portal is very very exposed, placed on a small plateu, so i build a rudimentary box around it made of cobblestone and go exploring, i find a huge-ass hive or something of glowstone and mine it all, then i spot another one nearby and go for it, then Ghasts attack, then i die, then i respawn and the game crashes wiping out my save ;_;

Argh, that new light thing can be frustrating. It's not too bad in the general tunnels, as creature spawns are fairly rare. Hell, even when they do spawn, only skeletons really pose a threat (Indeed, I guess I think it's just about perfect for that; makes me a little jumpy, but not in a bad way). However, goddamn it makes dungeons hard to wipe. EVERY. SINGLE. BLOCK. Covered in torches; and THEN a zombie spawns in the hole I knocked through the dungeon wall  :-\
