Lanternite -- This is a good one.  It will undoubtedly be used for lanterns once they're implemented, and the name sounds cool too.  So much better than "brittle gold" that is neither brittle nor gold.  The name on the Wiki is currently "Lightstone", and that just sounds terrible.
It is VERY brittle. Try barefisting it a few times. It looks quite a lot like gold. Therefore- Brittle Gold.
It BEHAVES nothing like gold, though.
Gold does not glow.  Therefore- NOT Brittle Gold.
Earth Gold does not glow. We know nothing of the properties of Nether Gold, except that we do, because it's Brittle Gold.
Except that's not how elements work.
Gold will always be gold, regardless of its location.
You can't take a gold block from the overworld into the Nether and have it turn into this stuff.
You're arguing physics in a video game with zombies, fire-spouting ghasts, and pig men. You're going to lose, just stop.

For what it's worth, I think nether gold would be a better word or simply glowstone.

Hmm... Water can't be placed in hell. And ghasts get damn annoying real fast. It seems that the longer you stay in one place, the more ghasts spawn nearby, to set everything on fire and tear up the terrain, yet they stay far enough away that it's damn near impossible to hit them with arrows... And they don't despawn when you leave. >:(

And it's called "brittle gold" because it's "gold" colored, and brittle. You may as well be complaining that "fool's gold" is a misnomer because it's not actual gold, or that "gold paint" can't be called that on account of not containing gold. ::)

You can't use a real name for things that are not that material.  Au has all kinds of properties that this rock does not.  One of which is being malleable, not brittle.  Gold is never -brittle- per se.
You're right. On an unrelated note, when was the last time minecraft  had the chemical accuracy of DF? The fact is, minecraft gold has very little in common with Earth Au.

Unless he's changed things recently, flaming arrows are purely cosmetic; they don't light up anything, and they deal no extra damage.

Its always been that they could set stuff on fire. Ive tested it with wooden walls, and the nether is full of flammable things if you can plant a flaming arrow into a mob, they WILL burst into flames.

We have to consider the possiblity that the Nether may be located somwhere outside of our normal comprehension. I doubt it's below Earth, because not only to compasses spin rapidly in random directions within, so do watches. This suggests to me that the Nether may not fully abide by the normal laws of direction and time, only appearing to do so because of your character's perception.

Its yellow, but why must it necessarily be gold?
Maybe its gemstones like Zircon, Yellow Garnet or Citrine? Thats more feasible than gold considered it seems brittle and not displaying any metallic properties.

Again, does minecraft gold display metallic properties? You are trying to compare BG with a nonexistent standard.

EDIT: In other news, the 6 new blocks are:
1)Hellstone/Red Mossy Cobblestone
2)Brittle Gold/Lightstone
3)Mud/Slowsand
4)Portals
5)Pumpkin
6)Jack-'o-Lantern

Heck even DF gold has little in common with Earth Au. Other than weight that is.

So now all the pigmen are hostile. Forever, it seems. I don't know how the hell they aggroed in the first place... Possibly a stray arrow aimed at a ghast. >:(

It occurs to me it may be possible to regen hell if you get a fucked up portal that dumps you somewhere it shouldn't (probably because it would otherwise be in open space)...

5)Pumpkin
6)Jack-'o-Lantern
What's the difference between those two? All the pumpkins I've seen this far are Jack-'o-Lanterns from one side.
