Well, all things considered, I couldn't find other nethergates naturally in my quest. Plus, where I was was pretty darn high.

I think gate spawning in the Nether would increase likeliness the more overworld you explored previously. You unlock them through the Nether.

I can see some stylish uses for Luminite. Nice material if it weren't such a challenge to reach. Fit for kings.

Has anyone figured out the components of a clock yet? I assume it must somehow involve Redstone, Diamond, or perhaps more likely Brittle Gold, but I haven't found anything that works with it yet.
On a 3x3 grid, gold bars on the sides and redstone in the middle. Nothing in the corners. Basically a compass made with gold.

I just noticed somthing odd. Note that these two are the exact same world.
Pre-Update World Memory Requirements: 3.50 MB
Post-Update World Memory Requirements: 0.59 MB

Did Notch seriously add a whole new realm and optimize world memory requirments by almost 300% in the same update?!

So, I built a portal, but when I went back through from Hell's side, I popped out in a different portal.  A portal that apparently generated itself in a cell I had already been to, a half-dozen cells away from the one I built myself.  Is that normal?

Also, fuck Ghasts.  And falling damage.  And the recurrent lag and stuttering I get from deep levels and magma.  That is a serious pain in the ass.

It just hit me that Notch has supposidly put in fishing, and not one of us has gone looking for that. I'll deliver a report on that soon.
Right-click with fishing pole to unleash the line. If it's in water wait 'till it bobs and right-click to send a fish flying your way.
You can also hook cows/other animals and drag them towards you.
Quite fun.
I think my poorly constructed drowning trap may have just turned into an awesome resource collecting minigame.

It looks like it. It seems that traveling to the Nether "unlocks" portals in the Overworld, which seem to show up by themselves after that point and can interrupt going back through your built portals by linking it to another natural one instead. This is still partly speculation, however.

I built one, went in, died a few times, went out, and was in a cave. Managed to dig up though.

Testing the brittle gold tools theory now!

Edit: it would appear brittle gold will not make tools. :(

I believe minecraftwiki.net says Brittle Gold is useless for anything but lighting. But what good lighting it makes. lv15 light. 15

Well, in any case, I've backed up all my old worlds so I can screw around with them as I remember them, and let he portals spawn when they do when I decide to abuse use them. I think it'll make exploration and expansion in my world more fun.

Speaking of old worlds, I worked on a snowy environment and made an igloo on a beach, and used that as a mine/home. Found the start of a cavern and had some fun. I also made a skylight for the underground home and made it look rather snazzy for minimal materials. Plus, with the right texture pack, half-blocks make awesome ceilings; especially if you also make use of skylights.

I'll maybe upload a pic of what I established with the painterly pack (Halloween pack).

Basically pretty disappointed with this update. There's a load of bugs, the majority of the new content isn't accessible in MP(which is still broken in several other ways as well), biomes are disappointing, I couldn't care less about pumpkins or fishing...

Basically, this does not at all feel like a months worth of work to me.

I thought hell and the biomes were pretty cool, right now I'd rate the update 6 out of 10 but boost it to 8 or 9 if Notch can get the bugs under control by next week.

The portal spawning really needs to be toned down. It's pretty easy to use it to farm obsidian without even needing lava once you have the initial 14 obsidian. Enter nether, exit nether, mine the newly created portal, then re-enter the nether with your old portal and repeat.

I think it's more a case of the first portal not being able to place the hell-side portal in the right place, so when you go back through it can't find the original one in its corresponding chunk (each block in hell would appear to correspond to a chunk in normal-space, don't know if height matters at all, probably not) and so assumes it's a new portal, and so creates one in the proper area back in normal-space.

Sadly, the brittle gold doesn't seem to be usable for anything other than making bricks of it. :-\
