True enough. The game isn't his passion; it's more just one large project among many others. He did a neat little RTS prototype called 'takns' somewhere in there. However dedicated he is to Minecraft, though, he's still more dedicated than I've ever been about game development, so I've no right to complain.

The prototype is old.
I'm not sure how long reorganizing code takes, but he is rewriting the engine.

When you have to reorganize the entire structure into three different programs it's a bit of a hassle. java client not included.

Also, Takns is old. Procedural generation is hard.

I've decided to restart my Minecraft server, as I suddenly realized I have absolutely nothing better to do than sit here and admin it nearly 24/7. Also, excuse the language, but when you get in you'll see why it's necessary: I'm using a huge-ass map. And no, that's not a pun, it isn't a huge ass-map. It's a REALLY FREAKING HUGE MAP. But I had to blank out most of the underground so that it'd load so caves and things only go down a few levels, then it's solid granite.

Anyway, if you don't have the URL already, PM me for it. I'm being much stingier this time around.

Wow, I actually managed to dig up the url again. Unfortunately it's late so I'm going to sleep the moment it loads... Fuck, too many things to occupy my time, and none of them useful. :| It'll be nice once I'm out of class though, just another week or so and exams are done. :D

Holy shit, you weren't kidding. That's an absurdly huge map.

 Also, heading there now.

Edit: huh, appears my link is not working.

Okay, what is all this jibber-jabber? Half the people trying to join seem unable to. And the link has not changed. Although I did erase any mention of it from the internet, so far as I know.

EDIT: Okay, everyone remember that you must be logged in to the Minecraft website before trying to join.

It just seems to generate a map for some reason. I'll tinker with it.

Edit: I'll need a new link or something. I think I'm using the link for the other server that was hosted after you quit.

I jumped in the server last night while it was fresh and running, and from the looks of it, I assume no projects or mining has been started. For backup purposes, and also a way to work on other personal projects without tons of other ones scattered all over the place, I dumped the map onto my hard drive; just in case things get a little out of hand like last time. I guess I can upload it for others to screw around with privately, as well as for Reasonable to have as his own backup.

Surveying the area; holy crap, Reasonable, the place is much larger than the last one, and it nearly looks like a bunch of floating islands. Or at least, the landscape resembles a giant plump helmet dominating the center majority of the landscape.

I wonder, how do you generate such landscapes? You know, in case I want to make my own. I want to see if floating continents is possible 'naturally' in game.

This, right here, is how I generate maps: http://www.minecraftforum.net/viewtopic.php?id=3970&p=1

A note: Minecraft has serious problems with maps over 1 Megabyte. The server software -cannot- run them properly, and the client software... is pretty iffy. To get my map to work, I had to 'blank' out the bottom 50 layers or so with solid granite. EDIT: By using Omen: http://www.minecraftforum.net/viewtopic.php?id=80&p=1

Uh, what about that tower you built before? would that be enough to put the server over it's limit?

Because if thats the case, we're going to have serious problems  when people actually want to dig or build.

I remember when we had over 12 people on the server, that sh*t was crazy.

I prefer when there are only a few people on, maybe 4-5, because then there's a closer knit group feeling, with people working together to form a common goal. (Building a massive underground labyrinth took 2-3 hours with 4 (!) people working on it, I shudder at the thought of building that myself.)
