Well, I finally got my copy.

So far, I spawned on a beach in a freezing biome. Nice landscape so far, but it was barren. No trees, so I did a bit of searching heading East from spawn (from what I can figure with the sun), and found a forest with some rather strange landscaping as well, still with the freezing biome, but eventually warmed up. I'm gathering basic supplies right now. I'll carry a pocket camp pack with me until I find a gateway. I mined out some gravel for arrow-making as well as gate sealing just in case I find one, and some buggers decide to  want to jump out.

Once I set something up, I'm going to make something like a SG-1 style base camp around the portal. I'll eventually make obsidian crafting a top priority if I find a good enough supply cache to get materials from. Demon hunting and taking down the almighty ghast will be a goal.

EDIT:
Actually, screw it. I'm going to risk it with my inventory. Unless, did everyone find one first, or build one legit?

EDIT EDIT:
HOLY HELL Nether is huge. Lemme adjust my difficulty settings a tad.

EDIT EDIT EDIT:
3 seconds after adjustment and I get tons of random screams of who knows what. Could be pig-zombies. Why... why... WHY DO I NOT HAVE A BOW?!

At least I respawned in a pretty kickass viewpoint, and in case I die (cheaters never prosper), I at least placed my gate in a nice location that looked like a gate would belong. Oh, and BTW, my vantage is a good 500 feet from magma sea level. I'll try and grab a screenshot.

EDIT EDIT EDIT EDIT:
Took a couple pics, but I had a ghast chasing me and I had to dodge a few fireballs. Had to set to peaceful to get the shots.

So after noticing the update was out, I generated a new world.
I spawned in a desert. There was a pit with cobblestone.
I went off and excavated some of the sand, and found mossy cobblestone and two chests and a monster spawner.
Two blocks bellow the surface of the pit(which lead to a cave)

Ghasts are actually laughably easy. Nether is easier than overland.

Are there enemies that drop fire? I saw some video and it looked like fire was falling from the sky.

Well, I feel like a jackass. I manufactured my portal, only to return to one not a chunk away which was naturally there, apparently. Took a moment of exploration to regain my bearings, but I found my old one, and everything else. I mounted a few flambeite blocks in front of the natural one (and accidentally set ablaze a small portion of forest), and am dismantling the one I made, and making it as if I haven't touched the area. Inventory and all. I like the place I generated.

EDIT:
You know what? Screw it. I'm genning a new world.

WARNING: !!SCIENCE CONTENT!!

Apparently flambeite has radial heat. Do not place them (as torches/lanterns) near anything flammable within a 3-tile wide radius, or else that might happen. As far as I know.

New science:  digging out gravel doesn't have a 100% return rate.  started with 50 in inventory, placed 20, dug it out, had 46 in inventory.  Need to test with other materials.

So my crundles are staying intact unless they're newly spawned... until they are exposed to anything that isn't at room temperature.  This mostly seems to mean blood, specifically, their own.  Then they go poof very quickly.

Not that new: gravel has a small change to drop flint instead.

I used the inventory editor to equip myself with a diamond pick, several stacks of arrows, and full diamond armor, along with a stack of obsidian and a flint, in one of my old, now unused worlds, to make a foray into hell. The giggling screams are disturbing/annoying as fuck, ghasts don't seem that dangerous, but they're hard to hit on account of how far away they shoot from (at least they don't seem to pursue you, just snipe if they happen to be facing your way). Also, don't aggro the pigs. For the love of god don't aggro the pigs. Through that full diamond armor they killed me in three hits, from full health...

So there are naturally occurring gates?

Gravel sometimes drops flint instead. Which means you can easily get flint for arrows by just replacing the mined gravel and digging it out again, until you have enough flint.

Well. I'm going to go cross-country through the Nether and see if I can leave a trail between gates and see if they link and line up. It may be a hell of a trip. Sorry for sounding like a wuss, but I'm going to need to do this experiment in peaceful conditions. I'll bring a compass for reference as well, and maybe a watch (need to craft).

This will take place in the same world I burned.

RESERVED-EDIT:
---Begin Log 1---
Okay, I'm ready, diamond armor, compass, and watch and other necessary supplies. It looks to be peaceful, but I can't be too careful. I am astounded that the compass and watch are useless while in the Nether realm; the whole place has alternating magnetic forces rendering my gear useless. Looks like I'll have to make something I can see from a distance that shows what I'm looking for (Native gate). Seeing as I have no glowy golden whatevers, this Flambe-ite, and the materials I got for the supplies should do. But that nther gold looks to be glowing. I gotta get some and make something I can recognize. Before I seek other gates, I gotta mark my point of origin. I took a snapshot of my origin in the Overworld for reference. Facing East, the compass points 135 degrees. That'll be my guide for navigation from other portals.
---End log 1---

---Begin Log 2---
I have taken a short time before beginning my quest making the point of origin easy to spot, from a distance, and when I reach it. That flambeite works well for making illuminated structures. Considering my location, this will be a dangerous climb. I'm way up high. It may take a moment to either climb my way, or mine my way down. I hope I don't come across anything unfriendly.

I'm not certain if they show up naturally. I didn't find any untill after I built a gate myself. Now there are three of them, and the other two were not built by me. It's slightly disturbing to come back from my first venture into the Nether and find more gates around. Has anyone found any gates without ever entering the Nether?

I am starting to fear that my comparing Nethergates to Interdimentional-Fatiuge Technology may not be entirely incorrect.

Hmm... On exiting hell, I found myself at a gate outside the mountain I built the first one in. Minecraft crashed less than a second later. On reloading, the gate was gone, and on entering and exiting hell again, I found myself at a gate placed in roughly the same area. Minecraft crashed less than a second later. :-\

What pumpkins?
I found a few myself. They're rather common in woodlands. Found patches of 3-5 of them.

Oh and about the flambe-ite flammability, I guess it was just bad placement on my part. oops.
