Out of curiosity, how much obsidian have y'all stashed away?  I've only got 14 (exactly enough for one portal) right now, and it takes forever to mine.  I figure I want at least 28 so I can immediately have an entrance and exit point.
I think I've got 28... But I can always make more. And I don't use the bucket method.(feels cheap)

Bucket method doesn't produce any extra obsidian so there's no issue there. Building the scaffolding and cooling the portal mode takes time too.

I just took a look at the mod section recently. Wow, I'm more excited about these mods than the actual Halloween update.

We've got a mod that allows retractable bridges, drawbridges, flood gates, trap doors.

There's also a light sensor for redstone so you can make things like a fortress that automatically seals it's entrances and starts spewing out lava whenever night falls!

Someone finally added back in colored cloth and recipes to make the different colors.

http://www.minecraftforum.net/viewtopic.php?f=25&t=66080

Ridable mobs with special benefits to riding different stuff.

http://www.minecraftforum.net/viewtopic.php?f=25&t=50021

Someone else fixed the bug where lava buckets were getting eaten by furnaces and not giving back the bucket.

And if you want to play the game like you're playing thief someone added explosive, fire, water, and torch arrows. I like the torch arrows the best (pretty much the only good way to light up some of these massive holes you find, especially once torches go out in the next update).

I'm also seeing all sorts of difficulty mods, chat improvements and other minor fixes.

Better wait for the update as some of these will need to have minor tweaks done once the Halloween patch is live.

And remember, most of these mods require having the full mod installed correctly and joining a server with the mod. And you likely can't join unmodded servers with the mod in place. I think you can duplicate your Minecraft folder for that, but it is still a large hassle.

I intend to start a new save when the patch gets out anyway.

I think I broke Minecraft.

Spoiler: What (click to show/hide)

I can suddenly place blocks on top of myself.

EDIT: Apparently restarting Minecraft fixed it.

Fun with Cuboid.

Me and Electronics messed around with stuff to test the server until we did this. The server stopped responding, Elec crashed, and I, mute and helpless, could do nothing but watch the wall of pigspawners head inexorably my way...

Wow modding has really taken off since I last visited that board. It will be awesome when Notch supports modding officially.

Most of these mods don't even exist for the server.

Future?
Um, you know he plans to release the new update in 8 hours, right?
You know that it will include a client update that will break backwards compatibility (with the server software), right?

Not having torch replacement is a meh. Him confirming that SMP health and damage won't be in is way sadder. Top development priority my ass.

The game is still safe to buy right?

Planning to get this for real sometime soon, but I just want to make sure.
