Discs are found in dungeons, so it seems.

EDIT:

HOLY CRAP, So I'm riding in my train and it's getting dark, and a skeleton MISSES ME and hits the Engine cart.

I'm dead now.

It was glorious!

I know it's unrealistic, but I can't help but imagine little bearded babies for dwarves. In my mind, they come out of the womb fully bearded. That's how the mother carries them around, too, she just drags them around by the beard or ties it to her belt. When the father's on duty, he just ties their beards together and the baby just kind of hangs there, swinging to and fro with Urist McDaddy's movements.

Every time I try to get an engine cart to push me, it goes the wrong way.

Push the cart in the direction you want it to go, then put the coal in.

EDIT:

I love Notch!

Put coal in? I just right click on it and it moves.

I love Notch!
That said, all animals can do that.
Get a saddled pig into a cart (and get on it) and the same glitch that made pigs on ice makes your cart fly along the track.
Put coal in? I just right click on it and it moves.
Right click it with coal.

Oh.
Put a chestcart between the enginecart and the playercart and it'll climb hills just fine.

Put a chestcart between the enginecart and the playercart and it'll climb hills just fine.
The minecar the player rides in has less mass than the other cars.  With a container car between me and the engine, I was rocketed around the track like a croquette ball, frequently crashing into the back of the engine.

I don't know about anyone else, but climbing hills was not at all a problem for me.  Staying anywhere near the rest of the train was, because it tending to kick me a quarter mile down the track every time it caught back up.

Climbing hills wasn't a problem for you because you had the chestcart between you and the engine already, like I said.
With a container car between me and the engine
If you hadn't had that there, you'd get stuck at the bottom of a hill if you didn't make it all the way up from the momentum.
Also, your track was short.

Dude, calm down, I was just taking the opportunity to make fun of how crazy my train was.  I figured the player-container-engine arrangement was obvious, and it was the first thing I did.  The crazy physics surprised me.

And yeah, I suppose my track was short.  But that's still some wicked speed you can pick up, that makes 64 tiles feel short.

I came off as being not-calm?
Strange.
Oh well.
...
If it's that big of a problem for you, put another engine cart in front of everything.
The playercart can't move the enginecart, so the train won't move until you fuel the front, and it can't go flying.

You don't. It's all very sort of blunt and simple.

Push a cart up next to a furnace cart and boom, they're 'connected'.

Yeah, moderating forums sucks.

Random tip of the day #1 -- For building underwater.

Fill the area-that-will-be-the-inside with wood, then encase it in glass.  Set the wood on fire and (after a while) you'll have a completely hollow glass object in the water for use however you like.
