Zombies don't do that much damage, and they are easy to dodge around, so it's hard to GET into a corner. The first thing I do upon finding diamond is craft a sword. Two hits and they are dead.

Even an iron sword takes like what, 3? 4?

Don't get me wrong, I'm not the bravest of the brave. I have been known to, say, switch to peaceful when faced with impossible odds, but that's (usually) if i'm being mob'd (PUN!) by Spiders.

EDIT: for reference this is what my inventory usually looks like.

To the left of the columns of tools is whatever. I always carry a stack of coal, cobblestone, and wood, and ladders. Everything else pretty much reflects on what I happen to be doing at the time. Right now I'm experimenting with Redstone, as you can probably tell. It's pretty messy right now though. Not quite sure why I'm carrying my diamond.

I know it's unrealistic, but I can't help but imagine little bearded babies for dwarves. In my mind, they come out of the womb fully bearded. That's how the mother carries them around, too, she just drags them around by the beard or ties it to her belt. When the father's on duty, he just ties their beards together and the baby just kind of hangs there, swinging to and fro with Urist McDaddy's movements.

I like to maintain the illusion that my vault is very secure. Because, you know, zombie thieves and burgling sheep and all that. I also like to draw diagrams; so:

This is my current attempt - a secret entrance. I tried making something a bit more complicated (like a hidden lever linked to the door with red-dust) but I was struggling.

Calhoun, that is a good deal heftier than my own usual inventory. When I go out I know what I'm going to do and only take tools for that job plus some survival gear. Like, I would drop the axes, glass, half-blocks, stairs and shrubs in order to make room for more meat, single stacks of stone and stacks of ores. I go generally carry a stack of torches and a stack of logs as well as a work bench because they are the most space-saving way of carrying wood for torches. I also carry mostly stone tools and one or two iron tools for harvesting the more precious ores. Swords are always the best quality material I can find.

 Sometimes I even carry a stack of wool so I can craft a fresh suit of armor whenever I need to. As nice as iron armor is I'm too conservative of it even when it's trash and provides only two and a half armor.

I would bet money Andrew has edited things retroactively, except I can't prove anything because it was edited retroactively.

I tried making something a bit more complicated (like a hidden lever linked to the door with red-dust) but I was struggling.
A red torch on the tile directly beneath the door will flip it.
Just make sure you connect to it from the tile below that.
A red torch connected from the same level just constantly powers whatever it is connected to, which is less than ideal in the case of a switch.
Side view:
Code: [Select]
D         D = Door
D         # = Tile
#         T  = Redstone torch
T          R  = Redstone dust
#RRR
This also has the advantage of not being openable with the redstone-torch-in-front-of-door trick if you place the door sideways.
Chain an AND gate after and you can lock it from the inside, too.

Blue lines indicate wires (and direction of flow, if relevant).

My chain of not torches dropping the signal down a few levels was constantly repeating, for some reason, and I had a direct redstuff connection to the door. This looked crap as well as not working.

But Jaybud4 - That's super, thanks! Looks perfect for my needs!

A torch loop will do that.
If you have one-tile drops, the wires can just route up them.
Like so:
Code: [Select]
D
D....RR
#...R##
T..R###
#RR####

E: Despite all you naysayers, he has infinite maps streaming over the network perfectly already, barring the severe memory leak at present that causes the server to crash in 15 minutes.
So not going to be forced back to finite for alpha multiplayer.
Hate to say I told you so, but...
Plenty of players... but sadly, non-infinite maps.
Quote
I might also have to implement limited size levels again (coming sooner or later anyway) because infinite map servers will use huuge amounts of ram if the players all scatter.
Nothing is for certain.
I completely told you so.

Okay, okay, uncle!  :-[

(In my defense, it didn't sound like he thought there was an alternative at the time... RAM limitations are pretty serious when you're trying to arrange dedicated hosting on an average user's PC.)

From what I understand, it is Notch, his fiancee, and the guy who made the paintings.

E: Epic bugs.
Door => Sign => Stairs

Right clicking:
Hand => Cobblestone
Sword => Sand
Hoe => Wool
Shovel => Trunk
Pickaxe => Leaves
Stick => Unused block (crashed the server)
Apple => Unused block (crashed the server)

Not a ton to see. Apparently doors and other entities are borked (doors become blank signs when hit) no mobs spawn, gravel/sand gravity is off, time of day is static, and furnaces don't work. Apples appear to be implemented though... they may drop when a corpse dies, or drop passively under trees.

Anywho, good to see progress is coming along!

Well, like I said, it's a bit messy right now, but I'm the kind of person who'd rather have a little bit of everything, then a lot of any one thing. Which is why I keep some building materials on hand at all time, as well as all the tools I could need. But other than the stack of coal, wood, cobblestone, the ladders, (Sometimes the iron) and the tools. Everything is up for debate. Most of my time is spent working on my main 3x3 tunnel, and I pop out whenever I run out of picks. Usually I come out with around a stack of coal, and at least as much iron as I spent on the picks. So I don't see it as wasteful. Might even start using diamond as one diamond pick will go for a full 100 meters, (Which are where I make surface access.) Whenever a break into a cave system, I patch up any holes in the main tunnel and create a small access to the side. The Iron I get out of cave systems are usually reserved for tracks for the main tunnel. The process repeats for infinity, (Or more realistically, the next update where I need to gen a new map.)
