Then I guess the real question is, how many players can one server support?

Plenty of players... but sadly, non-infinite maps.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Notch mentioned that there's apparently an issue with RAM space and player counts, if the players spread out across the map. My guess is that the server has to load all chunks surrounding each player, and that those chunks could be shared if the players kept to one general area. If 50 people scattered across the map... multiply that RAM consumption by ~50x, and there's no way people could play infinite maps in MP on any readily-available server.  :'(

I'm still hoping, though. Massive maps would be awesome, if there's any way Notch can pull it off...

I might also have to implement limited size levels again (coming sooner or later anyway) because infinite map servers will use huuge amounts of ram if the players all scatter.
Nothing is for certain.
I have 8 GB of RAM, 90% of which could potentially be allocated to Java.
I'm sure I can handle a Bay12 infinite server, seeing as how my server in the past has never seen more than 10 people or so.

Okay, so I bought it. I made a house near a mountain, got some stuff and built some things. Then I got nuked by a creeper. Also, how do you find ore? Surely theres a better way than just mindlessly digging through a mountain.

Look for caves. They're generally below sea-level, if you meant mountain literally...

True, but at a certain velocity the resulting explosion expels invader-bits at fatal speeds. You don't want to be dropping trogdolyte-shaped shrapnel bombs into your boneworks.
Only in Dwarf Fortress...

Can't wait till multiplayer. But as someone already said: not with minecrafters.

I hope minecraft community will not melt down (that is piss off notch so much that he will slowly lose interest... that would be sad)

The newest (and most controversial) is "Redstone", which allows for cell-based programming. Today's blog post explains his motives, if you're interested (and previous posts have comments that explain the functionality).

Besides that, "new features" depend on when you last looked.  :P We've got minecarts now - is that 'new' for you?

Well, I finally took the plunge and bought the game. made myself a nice skin and am currently wasting hours slowly digging out and building up a fort.
