Problem: A large portion of the fans of both are one and the same.
Hell, Notch is a fan of Dwarf Fortress himself.

I'm a goon too.
I didn't know, sup.

Also yeah I'm all of those apart from xkcd

also I think Notch is a faster dev, but hey it's not like minecraft is as complex as DF.

I do belive his Grace, the Lord of Apples, has a very good point. Whereas Minecraft is really a kind of sophisticated CA, DF has not only a 3D world matrix, but also whole layers of history, biology, physics, and geology simulation to run.

 And if you consider each tile of DF to be one meter squared, and take into consideration how many of those fit in a region and how many regions are in a large world you get a world rather damn close to as large as Minecrafts generated area.

My calculations show 65,000 to a side on a 257x257 world.
Minecraft goes to something like 1,000,000 to a side as I recall.
So, no.

EDIT: Better calculations
257x257 world == 4.328 million square meters
Minecraft generator cap == 4096 million square meters

Still, no.

I'm damn glad that I spent 10 euro on that game.

That seems like a rather generalized number...

It was.  I fixed it now.
4096 million square meters.
Because it actually goes to 64 million to a side :P

Both games are so fantastic, it makes me feel all fuzzy inside knowing they even exist. ;_;

Both games also **** with my OCD hardcore. Takes me a million years to get anything done in either, because I'm freaking out about the exact size, placement and aesthetic of everything. ;_;

This. Though it's less that I have OCD and more that I have ADD. I love DF, but I hardly ever play it because it's not one of those games you can pick up and play for a few minutes before moving on. It's one of those games you have to set aside a whole afternoon for, and unfortunately I haven't had the time for that. Also, random bugs tend to get to me sometimes, as much as I like the game. But mostly it's because I'm not imaginative enough to think up mega-constructions to hold my interest after I get past the basic survival bit. xD  While Minecraft, on the other hand, demands a lot less from you in terms of multitasking and micromanagement, which means I can focus on building a smaller megaproject (is that like Jumbo Shrimp? xD) without getting too derailed. Like the floating island I'm doing now. I'll have to put up pics at some point.

I'd like it if Notch and Toady did a cooperative project. It would have to be over Skype or something, but can you imagine the epic?

It would have to be a DF-to-Minecraft translator. Finally see your fortress as your dwarves see it!

I would. DF stopped being fun for me. I still love minecraft though.

To a degree, this. DF is still fun to play once every few months, but I can't see myself consistently playing for maybe a week at a time until the final version comes out, or close to it.
