The thing with caves is that some areas are really populated while others barely have any, this was deliberate but unfortunately I can't find Notch's blog post about it.

Well that's all well and good but seeing as you can't reset your respawn point yet (the keys don't work) in infdev, you're kind of limited to one area.

Yes, you should always apply more magma.

You should be able to change your spawn point using NBTedit. I don't know if this would work but it makes sense that it would.
  • Walk the PC to desired new spawn point
  • Save and quit
  • Open the level.dat file inside your worldx folder (x being whatever number world your on) Notice the SpawnZ, Y, and  X fields under the "Data" compound
  • Expand the "Player" compound
  • Expand the "Pos" compound within the "Player" one, it should contain three numbers
  • For each number; copy all the numbers before the decimal place and paste them into the corresponding SpawnZ, Y and X fields mentioned before.
I only hope the order of the numbers in the "Pos" compound is the same as the order of the SpawnZ, Y, and X fields. Someone on the minecraftforum said to do it this way, I haven't tried yet.

Of course they're the same order! It would be ridiculous, code wise, not for them to be.

Yeah, it would be.

It would also be ridiculous to use a (Z,Y,X) coordinate system, but that didn't stop Notch, now did it?

Z, Y, X isn't any more ridiculous than any other system. Sure, X, Y, Z, is the most intuitive setup for most people, but it's not innately easier to use. Switching coordinate systems partway through the code on the other hand would be insane.

I stumbled into a sinkhole, and upon approaching a source of natural underground light, and a horde of zombies found this.

I remember coming across this thread about a year ago, I think. It sounded interesting at the time, but I never actually tried it. I found it again a few days ago and actually played it for a bit.

I ended up reading through this whole thread and buying the game right after. I can't say I regret it. I played around in infdev for a few hours just now, and it was interesting. After a couple false starts I ended up being pretty successful. My first night on the successful run was spent in a little hut, 2x2 on the inside with walls three blocks high, no roof. It actually worked, though a stray arrow hid the side of the hut and scared the hell out of me. I spent the next couple days walled in a cave, looking around and mining for coal and iron. Now I've got a full set of iron armor and I don't really fear anything anymore. I'm roaming around now without a base -- why stay in one spot when you have the world to explore? I've yet to find any HFS or hordes of enemies though, I usually find them one at a time. Also yet to find magma. That should be interesting. xD

When we've got a stable Bay12 server, let me know. I can't build for crap, but I'd like to try anyways. :P

Yeah, this game is great, when you feel bored dig for caves and explore them thats what I usually do and it is pretty fun.

I tried the offline client and it works well, except all my pictures fell down and I can't place them where they were before.
In other news- I found my first diamonds :) after getting lost in a HUGE cavern system I jumped down a very very deep underground waterfall and after fighting skelletons for a bit I stumbled upon those gems near some magma, I was happy and I dug my way straight to the surface and made a sword out of them.

Hehe. I got bored and, after a couple tries, succeeded in digging through the bottom of the world. It's too bad that's worse than worthless and renders the world unusable, but it was fun. xD Congrats on finding diamonds, though. Haven't found any yet, myself.

I found my cavern system and was exploring it when I got knocked from behind right into lava.  Shiiiiit.  Now I have to basically start all over :(  Lost 33 iron ore, 60 coal, my iron sword, and two buckets.  Gonna take a while to replace.

Sorry to hear that.
I almost died, I was exploring a new cave I found, it had a very deep pit leading into another cave deeper below. When I build stairs down I found some gold near a magma pit so I started mining, I mined almost all of it away when the last block was in the ceiling and I backed into the magma pit, how I survived was, I had some food ready in my hand, aet it and luckly there were natural stairs leading up directly into a waterfall.
After I extinguished myself I quickly dug to the surface and ate my small food supply to heal myself :D I really have to be more carefull in the future.

What? How does it render the world unusable?

Oh, I lied. I remembered hearing that since you can't set a respawn point, and can't manually suicide, you'd be stuck falling forever. I just checked now though, and on loading the world again I started taking damage and died. So you can respawn on the surface after you do that, but it's suicide none-the-less. I don't waste those time and resources on a world I actually care about. :P
