The problem with an official modding API is that it usually restricts what can be modded to what the developers designed to be moddable. I foresee that many of the neat Forge mods out there wouldn't be able to be rewritten with an official modding API.

Microsoft owns Mojang.

1. Rewrite Minecraft in C# with modding API support
2. You now have a boatload of new C# programmers with ideas who learned from modding Minecraft.

Rewriting MC in C# would be pretty cool, C# is a nice language.

Also, a modding API could have been made expansive enough if they made ut when they first promised it, e.g. a couple years ago when the modding scene was still smallish.

I want to put together something that basically takes a look at items in a hopper, puts the materials they're made from in another hopper, and then destroys the original items, because the map I'm working on is gonna have a recycling plant. It is, actually. You just have to put the bulk of the assembly somewhere else. They can remotely target blocks, even if the chunk they're in isn't currently loaded if I remember right.

I'm really worried about Microsoft's acquisition of Minecraft though. Myself and a few others I know have got an adventure RPG type map in the works, more than a year in the works actually, that still needs several months worth of work at the pace we've been going. I'm very aware of the possibility of Microsoft doing something that incidentally renders it obsolete, or brings away any kind of audience it would attract. They don't have a very good track record with this sort of thing, and they're gonna want to make up their investment.

It's like abandoning ship before checking to make sure there's actually hull breaches. Sure, there may be some icebergs up ahead, but they might not sink the ship.

I think a better analogy is that the iceberg has hit and people are panicking with out checking to see if there is any damage.  So far all it's done is shave off some ice into the upper-decks drinks.

The deal just got announced. They literally haven't had any time to screw with anything, so "no fuck ups thus far" really doesn't indicate anything one way or another.

At this point the analogous situation in politics would be that a new President just got elected but hasn't been sworn in yet. "thus far, He hasn't fucked anything up" would be laughable in that situation. But it's still legitimate to point out the guys prior history, actions and statements to predict how he's going to run things.

I think the "main" problem here is people confusing Microsoft with stereotypical EA stuff.
"dey gonna ruin the game by adding tons of DLC!!!!", etc.

Something has changed though. Previously, i might consider shelling out for a copy of MineCraft (I don't play it at the moment, in fact I don't really seem to have time to play anything right now), supporting independent developers and all that. But just the knowledge that the money is going to MicroSoft might make me think twice.

As for people asking how Microsoft will manage to wring $2.5 billion out of Mojang: they don't really have to, because that's not how investments work. They had all this cash lying around doing very little, they've exchanged it for something of value that creates a revenue stream. Plus, that thing (shares) maintains value in and of itself.

Realistically, they'd expect a 5-10% per-year return on that money, and that can come from both sales revenue, outsourcing work from Microsoft to Mojang (they can shift game dev stuff from in house to Mojang making it more efficient) and increases in the share value of the thing they bought.

Plus, if the value of shares actually falls they can then declare a loss for tax purposes. So they might even make a windows phone minecraft and make that shit a FREEBIE that comes with Windows Phone. Looking at the long game, boosting Windows Phone with popular free apps would be worth taking a loss on Mojang, which could just be written off on taxes anyway.

Worst case scenario, whatever comes after the Minecraft we have now is utter shit and nobody upgrades past 1.8.

Forge for this version is already in the works and we have the source code if we need anything more. The modding community isn't going to stop modding for a while. I'm pretty sure Microsoft can't retroactively scrub the 'net of Minecraft as it currently is.

This is starting to sound like the dust 514 forums when CCP revealed what Project legion was even though its apparently nowhere near done. But with less panicked claims of ps3 betrayal and so on and more general worry over what MS is going to do with it along with a large glob of panic.

Never.

MS has already stated that they plan to keep Minecraft available for all the current platforms. Maybe not any of the possible future releases if any, but Minecraft as it is (and future updates) will still be on PS3+PS4.
