The terrain generated by Mystcraft (in any worlds not using Mystcraft-specific stuff, so most would work) could easily be copied out with those tools and pasted into a normal world though. That means that even with your aversion to the horrifying process of moving a file from one archive to another, the players wouldn't need it.

Rather than muck around with Mystcraft and copy/pasting, I just edit the generation raws with TerrainControl, which helped me make this. Then, once the terrain is generated out to where you need it, you unload the mod or export it, and the generated terrain works... new stuff is still generated as vanilla though.

Okay, question here.

Using vanilla only, how can you build down?  I.e. you're on an arch or sky-island, with nothing to stand on below the place you want a block.

The first thing that came to mind was waterfalls.  Get inside the stream of water, ride it down to place blocks, swim back up.

Then I thought of pistons, which would be much safer.

Any other ways?

Nether is always spawned with a bedrock floor, so you can just gravel down.

 Skymaps generally destroy those.

 One option if you have access to wood for chests is to just store everything except one block and suicide it. Tro to place a block on the underside before you fall to your death.

Ok, I'm very late to the party but I'm thinking about getting into MC. Before I put down the cash I was wondering if there are any recommendations for servers and mods. I'm not looking for PVP but rather for survival mode gameplay focused on building stuff. Any tips or advice before I buy it?

If you dont mind playing with B12-ers (and only b12-ers, for that matter) on a modded server, try forsakens server, there should be a thread hanging around in this board.

Else, i can recommend a unmodded freebuild server called superbadass, i played on it for a long time and it was quite a good server back then.
