Awww, Notch fixed the see forever sand glitch?

It really would've helped.  I'm trying to connect two safehouses, one at the top of the cliff I dug into, and the other at the bottom, but I'm really sorta just digging blind and hoping to run into the connecter tunnels I've dug for each.

Actually, what I'd do is set up a chain of TNT, set to go off one after the other, so you kinda have a fuse.

Count me in for the floating islands core thing.  Obsidian floating is pretty ridiculous though.  Somebody needs to tell him that pumice and obsidian, despite both being caused by the mix of water and magma, have almost totally opposite physical properties.

Caves will be much cooler when they really do spawn enemies.  I know they don't I've been wandering around in them for a long time now.

How far deep do you have to go for gold and diamonds?  Because I've gotten pretty deep, but I guess not deep enough if the map-viewer is any indication.  Note that it actually does render underground tiles right down to the bottom - hopefully Notch (or whoever made it) will add an option to layer downwards and see caves, although that is kind of cheating.

Oh, well, crap.
I went down into a cave.
I wasn't expecting to be exploring new cave sections for three or four hours.
This thing is GIGANTIC.
And so much coal and iron, everything I've done before this was pointless!
...I'm running out of wood.  Hopefully I can find my way back OUT of here.

Among the coal and iron were numerous springs (of both water and lava variety - some even occurred such that they collided and made tons of obsidian), tons of gravel (argh), a rather large dropshaft down into a magma sea, and a singular gold vein, thus far.

If I could only get back out of here...

Jabud: dig a spiral staircase back, straight up, and hope you're not underwater.

Be sure to mark the top of your staircase with torches and stone, so you can find it later.

Hmm... if someone can come up with a good contest idea, and people are interested, I might be able to throw in a gift of Minecraft to the winners. I'm thinking some kind of team-based thing. Maybe an epic multi-tiered Spleef match, or a Vs. Fort Building competition? Maybe some kind of Capture the Flag thing?

I finally gave up on finding a natural cave path to gold or diamonds, so I just dug a long, straight stairway down from the lowest cave I found.  After not very long, I started finding obsidian, but it wasn't uniform, it was interspersed with rock, so I tried digging around to establish a strata base.  Then I dug a hole through the bottom of the world.  It's a little jarring to dig a mining shaft, only to find fucking stars and a midnight sun staring back up at you.

Luckily I wasn't actually standing on it.  I guess I'll have to look somewhere else...

And ye' wasted it.. So yup. Nobody has a christmas gift copy..

And even if you might be suffering from a lack of credit card or money problems, just buy the fecking game.
IT IS AMAZING.

I am suffering from parental issues. Those make it hard to buy the game.

Well I broke down and bought it, but I kind of feel like I wasted my money at the moment.

How are y'all getting those awesome maps to form?  What options are y'all using?   I've tried various combinations of floating, deep, island, standard, hell, forest, etc. and get nothing like what y'all are getting.  Also are y'all playing infdev or indev?

If you want gold and diamonds you'll need to be in the same range as lava, as those things only spawn deep.

Underground rivers are kinda awesome though.
