You put the coin in the wabbajack? Damn, it's a lot easier to just give it to Charon and let him ferry you across. You have to wait a while for that, though, so I guess most of the guides say wabbajack. Anyway, the water spawns giant crabs- head back to the Old Man's Gazebo and he'll give you what you need.

Yes, but be sure to wear your vorpal swim trunks.

   I advise you sidegrade those vorpal swim trunks to unobtainum swim trunks as the vorpal affect has a small chance of malfunctioning and affecting you instead of the opponents.

I ended up making a completely nonsquare building/cottage/keep thing for my Wizzard (sic):

It all fits (mostly) inside a chunk, with the possible exception of some wall in the large open towers.

EDIT: I'm not too happy about the roofs, specially the big roof in the main building.

while I was playing, minecraft crashed. when I restarted, minecraft couldn't see the world I was working on. is the file corrupt and unrecoverable? or can I still get at least the map in some way?

Try using stairs for the roofs instead.

I found a pretty neat little 1.2.5 seed for people who like tropical islands: 4037904054716842510

It's a jungle island with lots of beach and an interesting shape.  Surrounded by lots of ocean on all sides, except for a larger desert island on one corner which has a smaller plains island further along the chain. Other than that, mostly water.

The jungle island has a little chasm which hides a much larger chasm and lots of fun things right underneath, so you'll have lots to discover and explore.

I have Thaumcraft and Redpower 2 installed, but I don't think either mod messes with the basic world generation. They just add their own stuff on top.
