I first played it when the survival mode demo was still up. That was fun, trying to survive with limited resources and mobs everywhere. I didn't actually buy the game until last March. Coincidentally, this was also around the time I first tried out Dwarf Fortress.

First got it when creepers (and presumably all mobs) would spawn at all hours, resulting in my first five minutes being spent trying desperately to climb a nearby hill, attempting to cut off access to create a safe zone, and failing.

After that I gave up for a year or so, until I heard how popular it had become and, more importantly, how monsters didn't spawn all the the time.

Right before beta. Bought it right after beta.
 

I found it pretty early in alpha, but only got it during beta, and then  a hidden virus stopped me playing it.
So yeeeaaaaah....

Pirated the game to test it, it was still alpha 1.1.1. Liked it, so yeah, I bought it just a few days after. Was hard trying to get my parents to lend me their credit card.

   A timelapse would be interesting but a few things would need to be figured out first. What are we building or is it just everyone building what they want? Is it going to be creative or survival? How big of an area do we want to build in? What server or are we going to have someone setup a special server just for the build? Who records it?

I bought it... dang. I know I started playing when creative multiplayer wasn't a thing yet, so I must have bought it right after creative multiplayer came out.

I certainly don't miss the days of having like 10 blocks to work with, but I do miss things like those old servers where you would build, then they would fill it with lava, as well as infdev, indev, all that fun stuff.

I miss the roots of minecraft, I guess. It feels very different now, and I don't like the feeling as much.

   Yes and using the newer Minecraft versions we have even more space to work with. Creative does seem the way to go as well if we are building something specific, the survival suggestion was more if we where going to do a town or something where the area was split up into plots where people could build what they wanted.
   One important thing for if we build a tower we should use the most height that we can. This would mean starting nearish to bedrock level but nice terrain is important as well so we can't just use the flatland option. From what I have seen we should probably get someone or multiple someones to make some nice terrain with VoxelSniper. Also I agree with greatorder about not having just one tower but in the end if we go with a tower theme I think we should have one giant central tower with stuff either coming off of it or surrounding it.

Because, you know.
We're on bay 12.
So... We would need lots of lava.

But a short burst of a bunch of bay12ers making a bay12 themed world, like for a weekend, and just then have the map up for download. Star Zoo Zoo anyone?

I'm much more impressed with someone's tower that they built in survival with stone they mined themselves and ore they smelted, rather than some guy who imported the blueprint for the USS enterprise and said "Hey look what I made!" or threw down infinite stone in creative mode.

Yeah, but it's not just one guy spending his free after noons, its a bunch of poorly orgainized jerks on the internet who don't know each other placing fake blocks in a video game over the weekend, so it doesn't really work when 10+ people are mining the whole continent apart, reaping the natural resources in the kind of orgy of manipulation and abusing the earth that the industrial revulotion could have only wished it was.

I only want to contribute to a megaproject if I have to gather the materials myself.  Want those wool decorations, better get shearing.  Want that nether brick monolith, start exploring.  Want a massive obsidian spire...well, better build a mould and solidify the lava in-place, because otherwise it'll take forever.
