It's the four tiles above your inventory.(if you can't find that, hit 'i')

Are you sure you're in indev? there is no crafting in normal survival mode.

Indev is only availability to people who have pre purchased the full game.
It's 10 euro currently ($16 aus, $13 usd?)

EDIT: or at http://www.minecraft.net/indev/ if you already have.

Buy the game. "Regular survival" is like Playing Left 4 Dead with no guns.

Basically, impossibly boring.

I have started a new map, because whim said so.  I like my new pad already - gravel flat outside, next to a beach, next to a pond, and in between the stone and soil layers.  Current project is winding a stairway up through the cliff/hillside I'm built into up to the top of the hill above my place, where I'll build a tower.

Part of the stairway sorta juts out of the cliff and above the abyss.  I've walled that area with glass, so it's a pretty cool view.

Is it possible to make glass on a hell map? i've yet to find any sand. I want to make a proper dwarven fort with magma lamps =D

I wish I had a ham sandwich. Right now. For free.

EDIT: Wasn't free, but that was one delicious sandwich.

Current list of features in my MC DF Fortress:

Entry hall with crossbow overlook, stonefall traps, crossbow slots and magma-flood pipes.
4 sets of doors, wood, obsidian, iron and iron. Wood trade depot before last set of iron doors.
Huge central hall. Rooms for 60+ dwarves (unfurnished) Dining hall with seating for 60+.
Central magma vent, capped and rerouted to entry flood pipes.
Magma pumps, powered from 8 waterwheels on the underground river.
Farms and Towercap farm ready for harvest with flood pump (maual) and gates.
Noble district with mayor, duke, hammerer and royal rooms.
Jail with 22 cells. Barracks with 24 beds and sparring area and shooting range.
Workshop area with room for between 12 and 20 workshops, magma enabled.
Stockpiles above workshop area. Kitchen area above access to farm/river.
Seaport in the middle of the lake with underwater/underground access and own storage area nearby.
Black tower above central chamber with much adornment and great view of the region.
2 secret entrances/exits. Probably more of those to come.

That's it for now. Still building, imagining.

No screenshots. Too lazy.  ;D Hop on if you want to see it.

Ohh, if anyone wants to build the workshops that'd be fantastic and you're more than welcome to. I suck at that myself so I wont even try.

In order to improve the universe's frame rate, we must all throw rocks into volcanoes and then do absolutely nothing, worldwide, for a week, to take pressure off pathfinding.
or maybe throw them into the large hadron collider to atom-smash them instead.
Not to mention to throw all available animals into tiny pits.

I'm trying out Infdev, and I seem to have found a free-floating batch of leaves.  As in, this tree had no wood.  ...I didn't realize 'till I'd busted through the outer greenery, but, yeah.

Also the game spawned me in the middle of the ocean.  It was kinda cool seeing the map generate all around me and how deep the water was.  Not cool was that the first place to generate above sea level was about a half an island length away.
