I just built my first clay soldier arena. In creative, but I wanted to test it out quickly.

I don't think flat arenas are a good idea. Most battles are determined by how many AI get stuck in their base.

A layered arena, with pistons to force the guys to move closer to each other would be sweet though.

They would all drop down, and pistons would slowly move them closer to each other.

Mine works on the basis that they can move through activated pistons. I then use a fishing rod to get them all to the battle area. Works most of the time.

I just make the bases close together, and then have the bottom half of the walls retract via piston to let them out. Very effective.

I put them in small skyboxes with a chest of feathers in the middle, one skybox for each time. The Arena below has random chests with weapons scattered about for added funtimes. This makes them scatter nicely and adds some variety to the fights.

He might have thrown it out, as you can see the sprite of the item fly out of your hands, but it's not at the right angle for that. I think.

also if you look at the edges it isn't a sprite, it is a 3D object.

Lighting sucks though.
