Which you can't really do if you're in the nether.

Creative worlds can be changed to survival somehow, no? Thought I had seen a link for a converter, but I can't find it now.

I suppose you are looking for this.  ;D

I think the idea is that you get a free portal the first time (unless you make your next one really REALLY far...), but if you want to use it as a fast travel method you're supposed to build both ends, since it will still link to the nearest one.

So yeah, you'll TP back to the first one in the overworld, but then you make a new one at the equivalent distance and then both are linked together.

Last I checked, that is only the case in MP.
Single-player, it always builds free ones in the overworld at the equivalent distance, unless the space-compression and valid-placement algorithms screw it up.

I believe I found an interesting seed..
While I was desperately searching for a world with a small village near starting point, instead I stumbled upon this..

The starting point appears to be in.. well.. remember the Gargamel seed from before 1.8?
This may be somewhat similar, but I haven't completely confirmed it because I didn't explore anything.. yet..

So, the latest place I decided to inhabit has a constant swarm of about 20-30 pigs around it at any given time.
Aww, yeah.
Let the good swines roll.

The mechanics of portals have been extensively studied, and there's simply a distance threshold.

If there's a portal within 128 blocks in the overworld, a new one won't be built.

same goes for the nether, but space compression makes it worse.

If you shove Gargamel into this version, you get a large pond of water intersected with a chasm really close to spawn.

Also, there is lava at the bottom of the chasm, along with gold, and some of the water flows into side caves in the walls of the chasm.

It's pretty awesome to look at, and aforementioned side-caves are great places to hide from stuff.

But then, life was also easier when I was running around here pretending to be a man, so I guess I should just "man up" and get back to work.

I think I am the first one to ever make a pit trap that can be randomly made in the desert with a pressure plate.

You start with a large square pit, fill the walls and floor with tnt, have a tnt over a hole, then have sand on top of that tnt, then place torches around that sand and continue to make a torch held pyramid. When you have filled the hole at the top with sand held up by torches, place a pressure plate int he middle and link redstone from below it, down to the tnt over the hole, and that will cause the tnt to fall, followed by all the sand, and then everything blows up :)

Doesn't that assume they will walk on the pressure plate rather than.. not? I mean I wouldn't walk on a pressure plate in the middle of a desert. I would dig under it and see what it is, or just go elsewhere.

The way you cover that up is having an iron door set in a cliff face, the lever/switch used to open it leads down to the TNT, I built one of those on the Planehacked Sandbox server when 1.7 came out.

Yeah I need a sandstone pressure plate or something :(

I would never open an iron door with any type of redstone/lever on a server.

I have a basic mockup on Lyoncraft if you want an ingame example.
It is project Obvious trap, Mark the third.
