Personally I would have offloaded the game to a few hired programmers and started on my next project were I in his position. And I wouldn't be directly programming the next one, I'd use the money to hire someone who was actually good at programming.

I wonder if it flows and pushes you along. Can you cut off the source? Can you make a dam?

Briggsy that is incredible. Might I ask how you achieved that perspective? If it's natural then alright, but it looks... warped.

Notch posted that on twitter, I should've clarified that.

Sorry.

I really wish he'd change the water mechanics. Probably my least favorite thing about Minecraft currently.
Agreed. Has been my major gripe from day 1.

He just said on his twitter that they flow into the sea or loop back into themselves. That's a massive massive shame.

He needs to implement Finite Water. Because really, that would make things better.

Yeah, then his rivers could be a bit more than
"inland strips of standing water."

I like the magic water, though~ :<
Also from his twitter:

Trying to balance gameplay against scale is interesting. I can do HUGE oceans with HUGE islands very easily and fast now, but it plays bad.

But the bigger the islands are, the bigger the biomes can be. And deserts want to be big.

For who?

I understand and respect why the water works the way it does. As much as people like messing with survival it's still primarily a creative block building game. Waterfalls look good and people love having them in constructions. Thus we have source blocks that are easy to place. There is some funkiness with infinite duplication of the source blocks because otherwise it would be very easy to accidentally cause widespread unintended flooding that looks terrible.

I can understand why people may not like it, but to properly argue against it one would eventually be led to how Minecraft is intended to play. At that point we just gotta go with what Notch wants and know there is a perfectly healthy modding community.

I would bet money Andrew has edited things retroactively, except I can't prove anything because it was edited retroactively.

They would at least have to add some sort of hollow piping blocks and a way to pump stuff through them before changing water fundamentally.

Which has already been done several times in mods, as has finite water, and it works fine.

And having to manually set up a contraption to get your waterfall in place would make it so much more satisfying IMO.

Maybe with the addition of the Creative Mode and Adventure Mode in the next release he could have some sort of framework to make it work, creative mode giving you the ability to place sourceblocks which act as water does now, with wordgen placing finite blocks which behave as finite water does.
