I started a fort with other features, After 10 minutes in I get the message "You have struck adamantine, praise the miners." Now, I did know that adamantine was the best metal in the game however when 20 - 30 frog demons came, I got demolished. Because I didn't know demons existed, when I got the message "blah blah" as been struck down I was like "What is happening" when I looked frog demons had demolished everything i had!

It took me virtually forever to actually find HFS, and I eventually just broke down and revealed all the tiles because I could not find it and wanted to craft with adamantine. Later, managed to catch 15 frog demons in cages

It took you forever to find Hfs? I was looking for the magma pipe like I always do at the beginning of a game and I struck adamantine

The thread already has "spoiler" in the title.  You don't need to have spoilers for your stories.

I once found HFS and managed to seal two levels off from the upper level; this got me only a small amount of frog demons.  Nevertheless, they were killing my dudes.  My important dwarves were in big trouble.  Then my pet Dragon came in and started fighting them as well.  The dragon kicked as*.  Sure, a few dwarves caught fire, but no one important.

Frog demons, you got lucky, those guys are arguably the weakest kind.  The really dangerous suckers are the spirits of fire.

My first Pits breaching had those.  I ended up abandoning because my computer could not handle them at the time with temperature on.  They cause tons of lag because they are hotter than magma...and theres 30+ of them...

Before I abandoned I was simply wondering what was happening. My first indication that something bad was about to happen was all the rock in the exploratory mining tunnels mysteriously melting.  My military was already stationed, I had played DF long enough to not trust the unknown. 

As the wall of melted rocks slowly inched twards me (at 1 frame per 5 seconds) I was not too worried.  Chasm creatures were for the most part weak, same with river and magma.  Why would this be any different?  Surely my full military might of 3 crossbowers and 4 swordsmen could handle this.

Then the first one showed up and fired a fireball, my marksmen fired the first round of fire and I check the creature for damage...NOTHING.  By the second volley 3 more had shown up, and the military had barely even scratched one of the creatures, and more kept coming. By the time the melee army could get swings in they were badly outnumbered. Then the melee military started spontaneously combusting from the heat.  But I doubt any lived long enough to burn to death.  After a remarkably short time I saw the spirits of fire pass the military's stationed position and abandoned.  Less than 10 had actually shown themselves by that point. My by all accounts competent military hadn't even moderately wounded one.

Yead Frog demons are pretty weak. I mean yes they still will basically cream recruits and plow through your insides, but you can sqash them..

Dunno what to tell you, I just never find them. I guess I need to just. keep. digging.

I was slightly prepared for HFS, so after finding adamantine, I slowly dug a maze downward until I found the pits.  A dozen Spirits of fire poured out and started torching my people, then a spear dwarf and his squad ran into the buggers and started headshotting them.  I think he had 9 SoF kills before he finally caught fire.  All of them headshots.  This with a base quality steel spear and maybe professional spear skill.  After that, they went on a rampage through my fort, only ending when I had everybody gang-rush them.

Spirits of fire are fun.

My Pit has SOF's. do you think that 10+ champs with full masterwork adamant will take out the SOF's?

My first fortress with HFS... I had already spoiled it for myself in reasonably general terms (nice metal -> pits -> a bunch of demons) so when I struck, I stopped all work elsewhere to concentrate on the mission to come.  First came the widining of the tunnel.  Obviously I'd be spending a lot of time down there, and I figured "have only one way in" was a good idea, so the thing went two-wide to aid in dwarves passing each other at speed.  Then came my first layer of defenses.  I figured a choke point with 5 weapon traps each full of masterwork steel rotating discs would probably do for them, with another half-dozen cage traps further on for spillover, and my 16-strong military further on in case of emergency.

Now, I knew the things spanned several layers, and naturally assumed I'd struck the top, so I figured I'd dig a bit out and when I got closer to the demons I'd finish up my traps and have my fight.  Unfortunately I had in fact found the HFS on the top layer of the pit, and further (from accounts of people who saw the engravings and knew there was trouble...) I thought I'd have to manually go down into the pit to start the invasion.

Now things start going wrong.  A miner breaches the pit when I think I've got a few levels of cushy high-end metal before the pit, and then a final warning before I release the demons... plenty of time to double my traps and arm/armor my soldiers in adamentium plate instead of a mix of low quality steel chain and plate.  Opps, my FPS drops to 2 and the demons are released.  Crap.

The poor miner who made the breach goes down quick.  A tentacle demon.  Now, at this point I don't know that the demons in the pit are always all of one type, though I do know SoF are the worst.  I summon the military, figuring I better be ready for spillover from my traps.  They arrive about the time the demons reach the weapon traps.  And walk right over them, because of course demons are immune to traps.  And then the cage traps, with which I had only just caught a dragon... surely the cage traps will work, and cut out 5 or 6 demons?  No, no they won't.

I lock the doors between the main fortress and the pit once the soldiers pass.  A few stray dwarfs have made it in on quests for XXPig Tail SocksXX and other such valuable treasures.  The demon revealed in killing my first miner reaches my army - and is quickly killed.  Then about 5 more appear in a few frames.  My 16 military dwarfs swarm them, and kill them all.  They get stationed closer to the pit, and work their way through the entire demon invasion as my FPS slowly climbs back to normal, and then push all the way down to the bottom of the pit to make sure they got them all.

Two stupid dwarfs trying to retrieve the unlucky miner's socks and whatnot

16 legendary wrestlers with mixed armor and a few shields, called in panic when I thought my fort was doomed... took out the entire demon invasion without a single bruise between them.  I was almost mad about that, to be honest.  On the bright side my military wasn't even back to the barracks when the next goblin invasion came, and was instantly followed by the second dragon... but still.  Despite my completely useless corridor of traps, I ended up *over* prepared for my first HFS... of course, that wasn't SoF.

My newest fortress will be the second to open HFS... though this time I'll be avoiding the embark tile with it until I've managed a proper King, just because I've never had that before.  And maybe this time I'll get SoF and be *glad* that my military is in exceptional full plate and with legendary in weapons (including crossbows...) as well as wrestling... or maybe I'll just win even easier.  I've got an alter to Armok this time (BLOOD FOR THE BLOOD GOD writ in lava complete with sacrificial lava-dumping pit) so maybe I'll get luckier...

It depends on how lucky you are, 10 champs, assuming they are legendary in Shields/armor/wrestling/and their weapon, probably, yes, you might get unlucky and have all of them burnt by fireballs, or you might get lucky and have all of them survive, I would bet on lots of casualties though, no matter how many you throw in. haha

Do most maps have HFS, or is my squad of 15 soldiers (champions of various weapons/ elite wrestlers with marksdwarfship, mainly) doomed to sit around doing nothing forever?

HFS is only ever in the mountains, and only one of the 16x16 squares has it deep underground. its easy to spot at embark from your appraiser however, due to the architectural value.

first time i found it, i had a queen come in. i had been desperately digging for nickle ore for a mandate from the legendary mayor miner. didnt get it in time, but found it later. it was 'mostly' frogs, with a single SOF. see, i found out that SoF will destroy stairs that you dug out of the living rock. had to dig new stairs to recover my wounded victorious champions.

It was my biggest and best map at that point, and one i have trouble matching for the awesome. but i got tired of my tamed dragon and purified HFS after that and moved on. my adventurer saw dragon, queen, and all migrating through a human village(!) at one point after that.

They should do ok.  May want to invest in an extinguishing pool or waterfall leading to the mines however.  That way if one of your military catch, they can walk through that and get put out, still likely be wounded and unable to spar ever again, but they'll live.

I have never actually encountered the 'balor' yet.  3/4 times I breached the HFS I got spirits of fire which melted him the moment he spawned.  The 4th time I got custom carp demons, but I had underestimated their strength and they overran my military before I saw it.
