A dwarf in perfect health suddenly decided to go on break for a month or two, growing hungry and thirsty in the process. When I noticed, and drafted/released him from the military, he started to "Hunt for Small Creature". He is now starving, dehydrated, and unhappy with still no other wounds. Very perplexing. He has always had a path to food and water, albeit down a ramp and up a ramp. Can the game not path to the same level with diversions down and back up a level/s? But even then, I deconstructed a wall and tried drafting/releasing him again, and he went back to hunting. I don't know what to do...

Are the ramps next to walls?

regardless, the slime shooter will be completed, come hell or high water, which are both entirely plausible setbacks at this point.

Ramps are easy to get wrong. The ramp needs to be next to a wall, as Untelligent noted; moreover, the space above that wall must not be occupied. Basically what this means is that you can't have a ramp at a 180° turn in a tunnel.

When in doubt, make stairs. You only need ramps for wagons and aesthetics.

All right, that worked. Thank you, and sorry then for reporting something known...

If you're feeling exceptionally helpful, you can edit the original post to change the thread title to something like "Please ignore, not a bug".
