Ah, well, was digging a quarry through an icy aquifer and. ended up channling through the obsidian filled channel i'd decided against.  Now I have layers that goes like this:

outside ice floor
light ice wall
light open space
Nothing
Dark open space
Water

 :o

The upper part of the area is light, and the lower part is dark since it has a natural stone floor over it.
