Starving/Dehydrated Dwarf Alert
« on: May 13, 2009, 05:44:05 pm »

I hate it when I only realize that I've walled a dwarf in when he dies.
Can we get a message when a dwarf gets a "starving" or "severely dehydrated" thought?

Pretty sure it's been suggested before, but I second this.  Add something in the orders menu to turn it off, of course (it could get spammy under many circumstances.)  But it would be far more useful than most of the messages that get spammed now, like masterwork productions from your legendary dwarf who has been cranking things out for years now.

I third this, although Aquillion's comment is also very much true. Maybe it could be part of the "notifications" command? Turned off only if you say to receive none?

Or that novelty cat thing.

But really? I mean if your fortress is acctualy so bad dwarves are dehydrating and starving left and right wouldent the spam be... sorta justified?

Asking for a disable setting isn't really necessary; Toady confirmed that all non-siege messages can be selectively disabled in the next release.

Toady, how much of DF is inspired by Labyrinth? Is Armok actually David Bowie? Because that would simultaneously be disturbing and awesome.

I support this, but perhaps you could add sort of like a marker arrow on the map including the announcement in the list. with up/down arrows at the edge of the screen so you could see whether the event is under or over you. I suppose this could be would all sorts of announcements, regardless of type (perhaps job cancellations and other minor stuff could pass).

I dunno. I think this isn't really necessary, and way more work than it's worth. Remember, we're working with ASCII characters here... how do you propose this marker arrow shows up?

I don't know. Perhaps a new sub-screen in the announcement menu that opens up sort of a visualizer, where you can select your announcement and it would show up in it.

This, I think, is most certainly more trouble than it's worth... for just one type of announcement. If you had it do this for more announcements, then maybe it'd be worth it, IMHO. But I still don't think having some sort of pointer is all that necessary. Jumping to the starving/dehydrated dwarf would work fine, and uses code that's already there. A much simpler solution IMO (and usually the simple solution is the best one).
