This is what Toady had to say:

I don't think we retain enough people or have a large enough fanbase for the advertising to offset the lost donations, since it would mostly be people that already play the game that are interested in buying the shirts, unless some of the associated artwork catches on in some way, in which case it should be able to stand by itself without being associated to the game.

The worst situation for us would be if a potential donor bought a T-shirt instead.  Even if we were getting 50%, that would be 50% lost for us.  This situation would require T-shirts sales to double the number of donors (among those that buy a shirt instead or through new users gained through advertising), and it would require a verifiable arrangement, even if the breakdown in numbers didn't rub me the wrong way.  I know there are plenty of people interested in buying things, but it's such a potential financial killer for me that I can't endorse or have anything to do with it.

I guess the crux of it is that I don't retain enough visitors to divert any portion of my revenue to advertising.  I'm not sure I'd even come out ahead if I got 100% minus costs.  And if I lose more money than I'm currently losing each year, Bay 12 is through.

The one guy I know about that I haven't shut down was mentioned in your thread, and there were two reasons why I don't mind:

1) the art can stand by itself and was associated to his web comic
2) the item didn't associate itself to our game

He offered to make a donation of some of his profits on his own, but I didn't ask for that as it's essentially an image from his comic with no direct reference to the game.  I accepted his offer as it was something he felt he needed to do.  I don't know the percentages.

What this basically means is that he thinks it would be a bad idea at the moment. I'll give this 24 hours for any comments before I decide wheter or not to lock up the thread.
