How about adding a paper to the box in the backpack?
We have a pen, so why not.
If you are in a place without handcuffs and so on and you are probably going to die, you might aswell take the paper and your pen, and write a log.

Also, how about a Trigger.

Screwdriver + Gun (Laser gun, Tazer gun, Revolver) = Gun (That doesn't shoot) + Trigger
Signaler/Timer(Imagine a hostage)/Proximity/Infrared + Trigger = (Signalier/Timer/Proximity/Infrared)/Trigger

Gun (Without a trigger) + (Signalier/Timer/Proximity/Infrared)/Trigger = Gun (If you press it, it shows a menu with the typical settings of the Signaler/Timer/Proximity/Infrared.
The gun points in the same place as a Infrared, the sprite is same and it can turn 90o.

EDIT: Also, all the security lockers should house one extra trigger to slightly prevent sabotage.
