Idea: Lighting.

Light switches would draw power from a standard powernet and deliver it to a lighting network.

Lights and light power cables, blue, would be hidden and revealed by t-ray.

A turf is considered lit if it is within two turfs of an active light or 5 of a space tile. This calculation should be done with view(), and only recalculated when a light loses or gains power, or the turf is created. The turf controls the grey overlay, and a single tile worth of light, rather than each tile of the area doing the same.

Lights can break/be broken, giving janitors more to do.

If you're going to do that then you might want to make power consumption based on the room/objects in the room, as opposed to the current arbitrary power drain.

Actually, where I am going to implement it, that is already the case.
Just got T-ray scanners working there, too. (Still need to add air stuff)
