I can give one good reason to make a mobile ship:

After the destruction of Space Station 13, known as "Bay Station 12" to its deceased crew, via nuclear device Nanotransen Central Command put a halt to all stationary research vessel construction and designed a new line of mobile research vessels, in order to reduce the risk of such a financially catastrophic event from occurring again, and to reduce costs associated with staffing and deploying the research vessels.

Okay, so we've got something to work with now.

What sort of things will we need that we didn't have before (since we're mobile now)?

Yea, having the research station mobile instead of stationary could make a lot of sence, economically... it would allow it to be more independent and not require a fleet of maintance ships to maintain ect... [instead it could go back to a maintance dock/facility]. And it could allow it to mine/research more then one location.

Edit for ninja: i would assume we don't NEED anything right away, but things like the asteriod mining ect, would work well with it.

Now armed with state of the art vessels, the new Nanotrasen crews embarked on a journey to the farthest reaches of the galaxy in quest of riches beyond anybodies wildest dreams.  Too bad they never get to see those riches, it all goes straight to CentCom.

We could have it set immediately after being sent out.  We would have to customize our ship to defend ourselves or whathave you.

Being able to add weapons systems if we discover them would be nice, for testing and such.  Against the syndicate.

Are we working with Z-levels now, or do we still want flat designs?

I'm thinking it would make sense if we had a layer of maintenance tunnel all along the sides of the ship, maybe with spaces for windows.

I would like to see crew facilities than we had on the Station. Maybe even a meeting area that's more interesting to hang around in than our old bar was, with a big window and everything like on Voyager, so we can look outside and shit.

I'll do a mock-up of what I'm envisioning, and try to base it off of Sukasa's design. Then, we can keep comparing til we get something we all like.

EDIT: A weapon system, even a basic one, makes sense if the reason for mobility is increased anti-syndicate security.

A mobile vessel will need an enclosed docking facility, as the smaller arms of the stationary vessels would be ripped apart by inertia during acceleration or braking operations.  We'll need engine facilities as well as power generation.  A better shielding system will be needed, especially for hull breach containment.  Gravity generation will be needed as the station will not always be in orbit over a gravitational source such as the gas giants the stationary vessels orbited.

That's just off the top of my head.

We are working with multiple Z-levels, yes.

Has anybody ever played X-COM: Interceptor?  It had research vessels, and that is sort of what I am basing this off of here.  Only we are made for profit, not science.

Weapons systems would be another thing to add, even if mostly they were there just for show.

I like the idea of a better meeting room, but remember that on voyager the only rooms you saw more than once or twice were generally major areas of the ship or the officer's quarters (the meeting room being almost directly near the bridge implies it was designed for officers and not general crew)

Multiple Z-levels means we should have maintenance tunnels running in a network on either the bottom or top of the ship (or both, but I don't know if it will get to being that tall).

The crew had a bar in the Voyager, and that was the closest to a general meeting room you could have.

▼Exactly.  The more overpowered the engineers are, the better.

I prefer maintenance on more than one floor and connected around, sorta like how in voyager you could get to basically every room on the ship through the Jeffries Tubes.

We are taking this conversation to the Steam group, because it allows the freer expression of ideas.  Join us, the steam group is called Baystation 12 (BS12).  We will post logs.
