The story tells of 5 dwarfs, each a fighter who was so smart, that they could barely walk and talk at the same time.

Anyway a goblin archer pack had come out of an ambush, killing several animals. I suddenly send my wrestlers to take them out. Guess what had happened. 2 had come out, but 1 strayed from the leader to be ambushed by a goblin pikeman pack. singlehandly he took out them all. Meanwhile the leader, however, had gotten shot in the throat or lung and died.... the rest of the squard took down the archers.

Why did the dwarf stray from the group, what an idiot! I lost a leader, who was a legendary wrestler.

This game does not offer perfect tactical control, nor should you expect it to.  Dwarves have... something, a randomizer for their actions, so they are not perfectly predictable nor controllable, not even close - a lot like a RL group. Often you can only control by overall policy and general trend, not pinpoint precision and individual detail.

i would immediatly make that awesome dwarf that singlehandedly murdered a whole squad of goblins with his bare fists the new leader of that squad, or even more

i think stupidity should be a stat like agility and strength, allowing you to make your dwarves more and more deranged things.

Heh, that's not entirely fair.

Lots of games like this DO provide exactly that.  Warcraft, for instance (not WoW, but the military/build game).  You gather a quick squad, tell them to go to X spot and wait, and they do.

Life is not always perfect, that's true enough.  But expectations differ regarding the details within the larger picture.

At least, that's how dwarves would say it. Although they're probably using magma instead.

The upcoming release is supposed to drastically improve the military controls; it'll be interesting to see how it works out.

Straying from the group - Pretty stupid but could be valid.

I had a legendary macedwarf who was on his way to the enemy ... and when they were so close that both him and the gobbos were on the screen the bastard lies down to take a NAP! ... so that was the end of him.

Same thing happened to my last miner. I accidently  flooded a part of one of my fortresses with magma, so this dwarf goes to fecth some food, but he could not reach the food storage because of the magma, instead he decided to take a nap while the magma slowly surrounded him.

On the same fortress, my engraver stood on the wrong side of the floodgate, when he was going to place it there, and I had magma going twoards him pretty fast,m he escaped to some curner as he could not get through the floodgate, the magma eventually caught up to him.


So yeah, dwarves are as dumb as.. dwarves..

With perfect hindsight, one could suggest that several of the deaths above fall into the PEBCAK category - telling soldiers to sleep in the field while sallying to assault gobbos is not, perhaps, the best option, and there are ways to manipulate what side of a floodgate a dwarf stands on while installing same.

They certainly don't do your thinking for you, that's for sure.
