Key to the City
« on: May 11, 2009, 04:16:23 pm »

While reading a very insightful book entitled When do Fish Sleep? which answered the kind of questions that few people are brave enough to ask, I came across the answer to the question "What exactlly is the Key to the City?". Apearently in Midevil Times large cities were locked at night to pervent intrusion while everyone was asleep and there were very few copies of the key that unlocked the city gates and they were usally given out to people who really contributed to the city such as a mayor or night watchmen.

Bottom Line: After doing a few quests for a king and building your trust with them they should give you something specile to the civ they rule over such as a Legendary Blade or (of course) the Key to the City.

Thoughts on this?

In medieval time, they're ACTUAL keys you use to open the city gates.  So they are just like normal keys (maybe bigger to accommodate larger locks).  The modern "key to the city" is only symbolic, so they make it huge for better photo op.

Of course, in dwarf fortress I can imagine a city gate with giant keyhole.
And damn, if it wasn't for the restriction in path-finding algorithm, it would be nice to restrict a dwarf to only a certain dwarfs.

One of the toads decided to go for a swim in the moat - presumably because he could path through the moat to my dwarves. He is not charging in, just loitering in the moat.

The toad is having a nice relaxing swim.
The goblin mounted on his back, however, is drowning.

If I got a key to a city, I would go to the capital of a nation that's at war with that city and hand it over.

This seems like an interesting suggestion but the way you're representing it sounds a bit weird. As in "So dwarf's have a huge lock on their gates that say, key goes here." In my opinion I see dwarfs only using draw bridges. Keys should only go towards doors or gates that nobles may use.

At least that is how keys should behave in Dwarf Fortress, for now I guess.

What about Keyblades?
They could be handled like swords who give happy thoughts to everyone around.

See, the problem with awarding players giant keys for doing good deeds is that most players are going to use them as a horrible and amusing way to shove an extremely painful item up a sleeping person's bottom.

Come now people, this is DF! Is it really so hard to:
Code: [Select]
[ITEM_WEAPON:ITEM_WEAPON_SWORD_KEY]
[NAME:keyblade:keyblades]
[DAMAGE:100:SLASH]
[WEIGHT:30]
[SKILL:SWORD]
[CRIT_BOOST:1]
[TWO_HANDED:4]
[MINIMUM_SIZE:4]
[MATERIAL_SIZE:3]

And if we get keys as definable in the RAWs, just give it the relevant tag.

With no actual blade.

But still, to please the people who would actually want it in their game.

I'm very amused by the keyblade idea and I think a Kingdom Hearts mod would be...actually more amusing than it would be unamusing.

The damage should be bludgeon, no way some piece of crap like that should be slashing thorugh wolfs.
