'Star Wars: The Old Republic' Unveils the Trooper
http://www.worthplaying.com/article.php?sid=62420

Trooper

Not all heroes carry Lightsabers. Some just have the will to fight.
For decades, the armed forces of the Galactic Republic defended their civilization against the seemingly unstoppable Sith Empire. Despite countless setbacks, the men and women of the Republic military never backed down until the Senate ordered them to do so. These brave souls remain ready and willing to lay their lives on the line today.

In the wake of the Treaty of Coruscant, the Republic military has begun recruiting from within its own ranks, creating cutting-edge Special Forces squads for the inevitable day when the war with the Sith Empire begins anew. These advanced strike teams are comprised of only the most talented and disciplined soldiers—a new breed of elite Republic Troopers.

These Troopers are the embodiment of the Republic military’s highest aspirations—the most advanced fighting force in the galaxy. They are equipped to face any foe in any environment, but it’s not their gear that makes them tough—it’s their guts. The Troopers’ greatest weapons are their indomitable spirit, their unwavering sense of duty and their undying loyalty to each other and to the ideals that the Republic represents. In this age, the stakes have never been higher. The Republic must win or face extinction. The fate of the galaxy rests upon ordinary men becoming extraordinary heroes. This is the path of the Republic Trooper.

The Knights of the Jedi Order have defended the Republic for generations, but they have not fought alone. A host of unsung heroes have marched at the Jedi’s side—common men courageous enough to enlist and face the same risks as their Jedi comrades despite not having access to the Jedi powers of protection. These heroes have not gone unappreciated by the Jedi. The men and women of the Republic military are accorded complete respect and admiration by the Order and by the Republic’s political leaders.

In the years since the Treaty of Coruscant, the Jedi have withdrawn in significant numbers to their homeworld of Tython. Their presence in the Republic military, though still significant, is not what it was during the war. In many ways, the Republic’s newly-trained elite Troopers have stepped up to take charge of the Republic’s defenses. When Troopers are partnered with the Jedi, they are a force to be reckoned with on any battlefield.

Specifications:

Deployed to the hairiest battlefields in the galaxy, Republic Troopers generally travel in small, specialized squads. It is not uncommon, however, to see a Trooper engaging enemies on his or her own. Whether operating solo or in groups, members of the Republic Special Forces have become intimidating opponents to their enemies.

The Republic’s experiments with a new generation of heavy blaster rifles have proven successful, sparking a galaxy-wide trend towards larger, more powerful and more versatile armaments. It takes a great deal of strength and training, however, to wield these war machines, so they’re rarely used outside the military. Republic engineers have also worked overtime fashioning new defensive gear for the Republic’s most elite soldiers, armor suits that provide maximum protection and flexibility in multiple environments.

Whether fighting as part of a small strike squad or at the forefront of a larger force, the Trooper can unleash unrivaled firepower against his enemies. A Trooper’s rifle is his best friend, and the military is constantly challenged to design faster, more powerful and more reliable blaster rifles every year. Wielding such rifles and wearing protective battle armor designed by the Republic’s top engineers, the Trooper will not hesitate to step right into the crossfire. Whether storming a base or a battlefield, the Trooper charges into the fight, blaster-rifle blazing, to clear a path for freedom and justice.

From the frozen wastes of Ilum to the desert plains of Dathomir, violent battles killed untold millions. Despite its avowed neutrality, surface structures on the water-covered world of Manaan were completely destroyed, forcing the Selkath to retreat to their ocean underworld. Other star systems fared worse—some destroyed, others left uninhabitable. The carnage concluded with the Sith Empire sacking the Republic's capital planet of Coruscant and forcing the Republic Senate into the controversial Treaty of Coruscant.

In the years since the treaty, fear and uncertainty have gripped the galaxy, enabling the Sith Emperor to pursue his own mysterious purposes while the Republic has made efforts to rebuild its infrastructure and adjust military priorities to the new galactic landscape.

Now, tensions between the Republic and the Empire are running high, and a series of border skirmishes and proxy wars have broken out, even on planets as historically peaceful as Alderaan. The uneasy truce established by the Treaty of Coruscant is quickly tearing apart at the seams, and a return to all-out war has begun in all but official terms.

A new generation of heroes, both light and dark, emerges to face the difficulties of these chaotic times, and fight for the fate of the galaxy in this most desperate age.

FAQ: http://www.swtor.com/info/faq

Is this code speak for "grind to level cap, get bored and quit", or does story-driven mean this game actually intends to do things different from current MMO's?

I'm sceptical by default to anything MMORPG, even if it is star wars.

Well, I never bothered to try Galaxies so I haven't been completely jaded. Most Star Wars-based games I've played have been fairly enjoyable though.

Galaxies was great until they nerfed everything. Great open sandbox game. From what I understand, Bioware are planning to make this a mostly story-driven game, something like the singleplayer KOTOR games (of which it is the sequel) including your own party of NPC companions and so forth.

I wish they'd just make a regular single player game.. the original KotOR is one of my favorite games and it deserves a better sequel than the Sith Lords or this mmorpg.

What I dislike about every starwars game is they take every iconic event in the movies and make a similar one. There is just so many half assed explication i can take about why there HAD to be a rancor in that crate and how you now have to kill it. You know you are going to go to tatooine, see a sand crawler ,and kill some sand people. It's like they are forbidden to come up with some original concepts or something. KotOR was alright, but I can't say any particular event there felt like a refreshing take on the franchise.

Very true, with the giant exception of the X-Wing and TIE Fighter games, whose design principles have now been lost to history.

Thus, the critical questions for Old Republic: can I haz space ships?  can I flys them?

I still am laughing at the fact that the Sith Empire rose up again and won against the Republic. It's like Revan's and The Exile's sacrifices meant nothing.  :D (Unless they created the Sith Empire to begin with, but that just makes it even more funny.  ;) )

I liked KOTOR1, loved TSL, and hate MMORPGs in general. I just hope however Bioware declare this Sith Empire to be the "True Sith" hinted at in the end of TSL, just to close a plot hole.

If it was some company I had never heard of I would be very skeptical, but this is Bioware. Though not without error, they've done some consistently good and innovative games. The DM client in Neverwinter Nights has to be the most innovation I've ever seen in the genre, yet it was sadly under utilized.

So I am cautiously hopeful that it won't suck. I really wish they'd make a not-massively multiplayer online game. I always preferred playing in small servers of <100 people, or servers with just friends or folks I know, where we had total control over the game if we felt one part was abysmally boring and needed to be skipped, or if we wanted to go back and do something again we could.

Am I the only one who didn't really like Kotor? =/

I think it was the fact that it was based on d20 that put me off.

I actually bought it, but it was pretty average in my point of view. I'm not really looking forward to this MMO either but I will give it a try when the time comes.

I am not a fan of KOTOR.  I don't think it's a bad game by any means, but yes it was functionally D&D with guns.  And the difference between guns and melee was pointless, because you could just run up to people with little fear.

I fail to see what was particularly innovative about it's plot or setting.  It consciously tried to incorporate as many elements of the original trilogy as it could, right down to storm troopers, a smartmouthed astromech, and a wookie sidekick.  The plot was functionally rote anti-fantasy-empire affair, which admittedly brings the whole thing full circle, Star Wars being Mythology In Space By Joseph Campbell after all.

Never arsed about combat in kotor. i only ran for dialoges and kotor 2 did that better(atleast the evil side)
Now about this mmo, I'd refrain from speculating at all untill its done and tried but one can hope that bioware will do something good.

KotOR was alright, but I can't say any particular event there felt like a refreshing take on the franchise.

Considering that it has served a pivotal role in pretty much every movie, game, authorized novel and fan fic, Tatooine sure is one helluva important useless, insignificant backwater fringe planet of no importance.

A related thing I've reflected on is that technologically, the Star Wars galaxy has been utterly stagnant for at least 5000 years, and perhaps even retarded a bit. They've used the exact same ships and weapons for millennia. Interestingly this seems to also reflect on story development (ok, one is perhaps the consequence of the other).

Am I the only one who didn't really like Kotor? =/

Yes.

Well ok, permission granted to dislike any game you wish to dislike. Personally I liked both Kotors, the only real flaw in my eyes was the somewhat uninspired and bland dialogue. The d20ishness was pretty unobtrusive.
