faildwarves
« on: May 11, 2009, 09:19:43 am »

I recently started a new fortess and all was going well, good starting pos and most of the stuff ready. When i realised that my dwarves where refusing to eat, so i made some farms, the farmer refused to build the farms so they all starved to death. Wtf.

Maybe he was busy or couldn't reach the plots.

he wasn't, and i recruited him and stationed him down there and he got there fine. None of the others where doing thier jobs apart from the miners.

OH WTF i reclaimed the fortress and now my miner and planter aren't doing anything apart from wander round the top of the peak. At least he built the farm this time but he isn't planting seeds.

I remember being frustrated early on by seemingly lazy dwarves.  Make sure your dwarves:

1) have the right labor enabled

2) aren't doing other jobs

3) aren't taking a break.  Dwarves can take really long breaks sometimes.  It's incredibly frustrating early in the fortress, since you often only have one relevant dwarf.  Later in the game, you'll have similar issues with tons of dwarves partying if you have a meeting area.

4) Can access the job.  It's very easy to assign a job inaccessible for very random reasons.

If none of the above are true and they haven't started the job after a month or two in game time, then I'd call it a bug.  But make sure you give it a little time - I've noticed dwarves sometimes take a bit to notice they have a job and sometimes they jump to it immediately.  Also, for planting make sure you've designated the field properly (i.e. assigned it to grow crops every season and make sure you have the right seeds)

They died after a month? 0.o

How much food did you bring along?  Did they just not eat it?  I've never heard of that.

Did you forbid your wood stockpile or anything? Because there's 3 wood in the wagon. Are you sure it's accessible?

You un-recruited him, right? (Assume so, but have to ask - ya never know.)

Did you by chance use Reveal or other 3rd party utility on the map before reclaiming?  There are some bugs associated with those.

Hmmm... somehow forbidding the seeds is the only thing I can think of.

Ive had dwarfs stop doing things when on a microfortress (1x1) map before. They would lock up until animals came onto the map and scared them, they would also starve to death if no animal made them move. Ive also had them sit still for over a month after doing a set of jobs if I edit their speed to max.

"Yeah. My plan was to drop some kittens into the siege, and have my dwarves freefall into battle, landing on top of the kittens. The plan was kinda dumb though because the kittens were standing on grates, and the goblins killed them with arrows just as I was releasing the freefalling dwarves. So the dwarves weren't able to land on kittens and just fell and died."
