Dwarf Fortress and Windows 7
« on: May 11, 2009, 01:59:49 am »

Before you yell at me to use the search feature...

Anyway. It runs on Windows 7, however I'm noting worse performance issues in some cases. I guess my poor Celeron 2.4GHz is opting for retirement, however I read that someone's been making medium sized maps on a Pentium 750MHz and playing at acceptable fps. So, I wonder... what am I doing wrong?

Are there some performance tips I should be aware of? Init settings? Anything?

Can I assume you've tried the 40dXX versions with optimised rendering code?

Before you yell at me to use the search feature...

Put quotation marks around it to search for it as a phrase, like so: "Windows 7"
Also, if you run a search using the box up in the right corner, it will only search in the particular board which you are viewing (or the board which the topic you're viewing is located within). You could move back out to the forum index to search the entire forum, or use the advanced search form.

Turn off temperature, and play on a map without moving water. As few z levels as possible helps too.

Quotation marks, check. Thanks!

As for performance, yes, I am using 40d11. Out of the box it CRAWLED. I'm not kidding. I had to set some init options - frame buffer and such - for it to run; then I get artifacts, which aren't game breaking.

Playing without temperature and flowing water is like playing without the sun and wind. It is not as enjoyable anymore.

The main problem here is your operating system.

Windows Xp > All Newer Windows.

I hope you understand. Microsoft has a lot of issue with this. No one wants to buy newer, slower, only "prettier" os', that serve to make PC's into Macs.

Windows Xp > All Newer Windows.

I disagree. Windows 7 is better then xp. and faster.

I had essentially the same experience as Mipe. It ran, just slower. I worked at Microsoft during the build for XP and Vista and I know all performance bets are off until the final version ships anyhow.

This system + Vista or Windows 7 = Fail. You should upgrade, or just use WinXP.  :)

Ran fine on my Win7 Beta, runs fine on my Win7 RC.

Once you've used Win7 for a while, especially the taskbar, using XP actually causes physical pain.  Plus manufacturers are going to start dropping support for it soon......

In a fat-fingered moment while setting up another military squad I accidentally created a captain of the guard rather than a militia captain.  His squad of near-legendary hammerdwarves equipped with high quality silver hammers then took it upon themselves to dispense justice to all the mandate breakers in the fortress.  It was quite messy.
