RNG really freaks me out.

This is a fit name for a hammerer, isn't it?

I'm beginning to wonder if DF's random namer is actually as random as we think; it seems to turn up eerily appropriate names more often than you'd expect if it was purely random.

Well, I have a volcano on one of my maps named "The wrath of bins."
So yes, I think it is random...

I think it could have something to do with the 'spheres' thing. Things get names related to their spheres. The hammerer could get names with words related to death, hammers, etc. with a higher probability than an ordinary Urist McFisherdwarf.

Two words:  Lignite bins.

One word:  Spheres.

Those are groups of word associations in the raws.  Some of the hard-coded random naming uses those, I believe.

Alternately: The Brick Testament. It's a really fun look at what the bible would look like if interpreted literally. With Legos.

A while back, I was looking through my Captain of the Guard's kill list, and one of them was a goblin thief named Ngo Stupidthief.

I laughed a bit.

Most RNGs use a randomness algorithm, so it's not truely random, but it's close. Also: Spheres

Of course it uses a randomness algorithm, or else "random" wouldn't be in the name.

The non-random part of DF naming is when, like people have mentioned, it uses sphere alignments. It does this for map features (taking into account things like good/evil alignment and biomes), deities, historical events, POSSIBLY site names, and I forget what else. I don't think it's applied to random dwarf names, although it might rule out names based on CULL_SYMBOL values or something like that, so you don't get Urist Incesttumors.

I think by randomness you mean true randomness as opposed to pseudorandomness. Such a difference in terms really is only a problem in encryption, and thus a nonproblem for DF.

 Entirely spheres.

But if I misunderstood you, my apologies. Please people, let us keep this on DF and it's RNG. I don't want to hear about the other uses of true random number generators, or what minor fact I have wrong.
