Journal of Zerris Lashedwrung Hematite 1, 202

The funeral for both Dastot Blueconstruct the Metalcrafter and Iden Zozonul the Kitten were today. Not many really knew Dastot, she kept mostly to herself when not working on the forge. At least now she will rest with the ancestors. Her coffin just just outside the forge. In hopes her memory will inspire those to honor her memory and strive to what she'd been unable to do. Become legendary smiths and forge items of fine quality.

No less attention was given to the Kitten either. Much to the Hunter's graditute, we placed the cats coffin right next to Dastots in the hall outside the forge. Hopefully this will keep the Hunter from yelling at others and let his anger cool. He still has his puppy to console him of course.

On a better note the exploratory mining is in full swing again. Though we've yet to find any gems beyond rock crystals. An amusing thing was that even though others could go outside. The entry hatch had gotten stuck, and no one thought to inform me till today. I immediately ordered it forced open and then repaired as well as more construction on the perimeter wall. Hopefully the next time an Imp sets off a fire we can just retreat behind the walls and watch it go by us.

Journal of Zerris Lashedwrung Hematite 14, 202

A caravan arrived today, this one was run by humans from 'The Unions of Obscurity' whom had stumbled onto our fort mere days after the draw bridge was completed. All that is left to complete is the northern wall and our outpost will be able to be completely enclosed. The moat will be able to expanded and act as a fire break as well as an obstical for any goblins that might attempt to attack.

A check of the stocks showed we had NO crafts whatsoever to trade. So I ordered all the mechanisms brought up to trade. Since the humans do have the intelligence to have wagons unlike the crazy elves who carry everything on their backs.

The humans came in from the west, unlike the dwarven caravan that comes from the south or the elven one that comes in from the northeast.

I sold most of the more expensive mechanisms. Mostly for booze food, a cow, and a shield and of course a second anvil.

Journal of Zerris Lashedwrung Hematite 25, 202

The first of our guards became a wrestling champion today. Soon I will have them begin training in swords once the armor for them all is made. Giltauthor became a full fledged miner sometime this month as well. He's looking less and less like a pansy elf and more and more like a proper dwarf. Even if he still wears elven style clothing.

Journal of Zerris Lashedwrung Malachite 10, 202

We now have three fully trained champions. The rest of the guards are continuing their hand to hand training. This will help reduce fatalities once they begin training with other weapons.

Also our first engraving has been made. It's quite impressive it shows me and the rest of the Founding Seven working hard in the founding of Soothedcraft.

Journal of Zerris Lashedwrung Malachite 11, 202

Keith has finally become our fourth champion. Which is ironic as he was our first guard as well. One would have thought that he would be the first one.

Well I was rather presumptuous. In all the forts I've had so far, I would have hit three gem deposits by now. Usually chrysocolla for some reason. Lets see if the Jackal of Lesions attacks soon.

Imagine a cool peice of sky-blue and milk-white marble about 3cm by 2cm and by 0.5cm, containing a tiny 2mm malacolite crystal. Now imagine the miles of metamorphic rock it's embedded in that no pick or chisel will ever touch. Then, imagine that those miles will melt back into their mantle long before any telescope even refracts an image of their planet. The watchers will be so excited to have that image too.

Its not a problem Nivm between the search pattern and the fact I don't know if we have any Hidden Fun Stuff on this map. It's no surprise we haven't found any. We are after all in a swamp. I figure its mostly in the deeper levels we are starting to delve into.

Journal of Zerris Lashedwrung Malachite 14, 202

Ascubis took a break from his endless making of blocks today. Throwing a party in the dining hall. For some reason the third engraving that was made today was of three large roaches. I had to suppress a shutter at how life like they were at first. The second one incidentally was of a star.

Journal of Zerris Lashedwrung Malachite 15, 202

Today I saw the latest work by our engravers. A picture of me standing in a regal pose and holding up a battle axe. It was quite flattering. And with it right next to the roach carving I can imagine its me using an axe to kill those roaches.

Immediately after my portrait is an engraving of three barrels. The symbol of our civilization. Also the Jeweler that had arrived with the last wave of migrants carved a portrait of a table.

Journal of Zerris Lashedwrung Malachite 16, 202

We finally started on the next level down and immediately we struck Hematite. Now if there is enough we won't have to worry about importing our iron anymore.

Journal of Zerris Lashedwrung Galena 27, 202

Ascubis finally picked up his iron pick and Labs and his assistants are beginning to churn out armor and weapons for the eight champions that guard the entrance on rotating shifts of two squads. For now they will be all sworddwarfs, the marksdwarfs won't be trained until the second level of the wall is built.

I've authorized she slow decent to lower levels. It's time we build the perminent housing districts before it starts getting overcrowded here as well. Once we are deep enough this should help allow us to have lots of cheap housing for not just the thirty five dwarves that currently live here. But the larger amounts that will soon be arriving.

Still we haven't found any gems at all so all the gem cutters and jewelers are joining in the mining efforts to find the needed veins.

Yay, you saved me! :D

Thanks. Without jeffers, who would slowly turn the fortress into a deathtrap?

Also, can you post a dfma of the fort soonish? I'd love to have an interactive map so I could poke around and see what everybody's been up to.

journal:
as i was mining out some stone i heard i great truffle going on up on the surface from in the mines. i am assuming that the elven kid  went outside and did something stupid. i will just have to make him work harder if it is true.
.....     well  it was the elven kid. and we lost a kitty.....and an assitant. een though we had some losses the imp was killed and so was that pesky gator that was seen roaming the surface. With the migration we got a hunter so all we need now is a butcher. i don't think zerris knows what he is doing with it(just build it and have someone set to butchering and when ever ur hunter gets a kill the butcher should automatically butcher it). after some explaining i have told zerris on how it works. hopefully it gets build right.

YES! we are mining into a third level! more fun for me.. and i have become a master of mining. when i have taught the elven dwarf all i know i might just start to work on masonry. :D

sub level 15 is where the housing districts will be.

Journal of Zerris Lashedwrung Limestone 4, 202

The champions proved their worth when they killed a kobold trying to sneak in today. Which means yet another free profit on items we don't have to make.

Work in the second level came to a halt today due to a massive miasma outbreak in the butcher shop. Apparently no one thought to clean the place out after the first test butchering was completed.

A petition for a larger trash heap has been submitted to my desk and I have no problem with having it set as a priority structure. Just need a good location for it.

Journal of Zerris Lashedwrung Limestone 7, 202

The guards were all issued copper swords today. This should make their jobs a bit easier. Especially as more and more armor is forged for them.

Journal of Zerris Lashedwrung Limestone 13, 202

The Hamlet Liason and the dwarven caravan arrived today. It was quite a surprise actually to realise that we aren't an outpost anymore, but a hamlet. They seemed quite happy at the sight of a guarded trade depot.

They had plenty of tower-cap wood and of course charcoal and steel! Sadly of there were no birds for Labs in this caravan either. I'm now a certified Trader instead of just a clerk. That of course means I'll be able to get even better deals once the next caravan shows up.

Journal of Zerris Lashedwrung Sandstone 1, 202

Well we know that Jeffers's cage trap security system works. Since our Engraver set it off and had to be let out of the cage. Hamster also outdone herself with a master piece of a turtle bone bracelet today.

Also the digging deeper has uncovered several layers of marble. This should help us quite well.

Journal of Zerris Lashedwrung Sandstone 6, 202

We've reached the fifteenth level down today. Which is in the gabbro shelf. I plan to have both the tombs and the low cost housing on this floor. The plan Jeffers made gives us about ninety-six rooms with various halls here and there all branching off from a large central hall. Each room will have room for a bed, a chest, a cabinet and one other object. I've approved it for the low cost housing and requested he begin designing the next level up for the next housing cost level.

While excavating the centrail chamber Ascubis reports he found a vein of rose quartz. It will be interesting getting it out without ruining the housing plans.

Journal of Zerris Lashedwrung Sandstone 17, 202

We managed to get Jeffers to stop laying traps long enough to build a release for the cage that our Engraver got caught in. Hopefully now she'll no longer be depressed at being confined. Hopefully she won't fall asleep atop a trap again.

Also the perimeter wall is now finished! There is only one way in or out of the wall and that is currently a four cubit wide moat with a drawbridge over it. We can begin construction of the gate house and new improved barracks!

Journal of Zerris Lashedwrung Timber 3, 202

We struck a vein of kimberlite today in the low cost housing district. We will have to replace those sections with gabbro walls once everything is finished. Already dwarves are moving into the doorless rooms as beds are being moved down there.

Journal of Zerris Lashedwrung Timber 22, 202

Labs threw a party today. It was quite amusing watching everyone enjoy themselves. I think one of the dwarves got so drunk he or was it she was dancing atop the tables for a bit. Pete seems to like his new office. Though soon he'll be moving into the room in back of it. Also I've recieved word that it's time to remove the cage traps from the stairs. Since our engraver got caught again in one.

Of course Jeffers was too busy attending the party to go and release her immediatly.

Journal of Zerris Lashedwrung Moonstone 23, 202

The Engraver was released again. And this time there are no traps for her to fall asleep on.

Journal of Zerris Lashedwrung Moonstone 25, 202

Goblins! Goblin child snatcher was spotted and killed today. Both Sheriff Pete and one of the guard chased it down. The Champion however was the one who caught it and made the final kill. Jeffers is now working on making the drawbridge able to be raised as soon the goblins will be arriving no doubt.

Journal of Zerris Lashedwrung Opal 11, 202

We've struck a vein of milk quartz. Giltauthor and the jewelers seem quite busy in their shop cutting gems and setting them in various items.

Journal of Zerris Lashedwrung Obsidian 1, 202

The first baby in the Hamlet was born today. Born to the Fish Cleaner and one of the Champions. A truely momentus occasion as the only children that had been here prior were those who'd come with their parents as migrants. We now have a constant guard of the Guard at the drawbridge, rotating regularly to insure that NO Goblins make it through and kidnap the child.

A second baby was born as well. Now we have two infants that need to be worried about and guarded.

Journal of Zerris Lashedwrung Obsidian 7, 202

A third baby was born today from yet another of our Female Champions. putting our total population at 38.

Journal of Zerris Lashedwrung Obsidian 28, 202

A with a bit of engineering on both Ascubis and Jeffers' part the moat is beginning to fill. The Goblins won't know the source as it is from the brook via a hidden tunnel. Controlled by a lever next to the drawbridge control we can theoretically flood the entire swamp without it coming into the Fort.

Pete's log-
   The 4th of Limestone -

Today I asked Nivm if he could set some milk quartz into my axe.

It will be a nice ice breaker. harharhar.

Triple entendre!
*Axes break things
*I can talk about how I always have some milk with me. (quarts of it!)
*I can tell people that the rocks are actually the petrified eyes of goblins who have been blinded by my awesomeness.
