Labs' journal entry 4:
          The year was off to a good start. For one, that elf boy was leaving me alone and we even had a party. The wedding was great, I dont remember the second half very much, probably all the rum. I completely forgot about the elves, I should ask Zerris if i can make a metal cage for a bird to be put in my room.
                 End of entry.

OOC: Yea about that, could I get a bird in my room? I have 11 of em in RL.  ;)

Can the sherriff be called Keith, and have nobody like him even though he's really competent?

And you can't eat them, either, sadly. Even though it'd make sieges so much more fun; dwarves lining the walls, drooling and carrying sharp knives and forks, ready for the upcoming meals.

We don't have a sheriff yet. If you mean the Recruit I can rename him Keith if you want.

I thought Pete was the sheriff... Oh well, he can be the captain of the guard.

Journal of Zerris Lashedwrung Granite 25, 202

Pete went and killed three of the slugmen today. two of which he sent flying into the lava vent. A fourth one however dived into the vent to get away from him. He went very close to where the Imp was but for some reason didn't kill it.

Journal of Zerris Lashedwrung Slate 8, 202

Giltauthor was sighted near the magma vent taunting the Imp before running back to the outpost. I've asked Keith, the Recruit recently to keep an eye on the elf-dwarf. If he causes it to start a fire then want him locked outside to deal with the blaze with only a bucket.

This time I traded all bone and stone crafts to the elves for food, booze, and of course lots of cloth. All we need is a weaver.

Journal of Zerris Lashedwrung Slate 15, 202

I've restarted a few of the mining projects now that things are relatively safe again and everyone is once again permitted to leave.

Journal of Zerris Lashedwrung Slate 20, 202

Hamster through a party in the dining hall today. Most who could attended. Both she and Jeffers seem to be enjoying themselves as a married couple these days.

Journal of Zerris Lashedwrung Slate 23, 202

Another wave of migrants arrived to the outpost today. We now have thirty six dwarves. All the unskilled peasants were drafted into the military today. And Keith is now in charge of a company of dwarves. With Pete being the new sheriff.

I removed the Founding census statuses as well as MW1 statuses since they didn't update the current professions everyone was in. Labs got two more assistants. As did Hamster. There was also a hunter in this batch so I've authorized the creation of a butchery finally. The wood crafter that arrived was immediately sent to Pete to learn how to be a carpenter. Now just need a decent recruit for woodcutter.

Giltauthor isn't the only gem cutter either anymore. There is even a jeweler and two others that will be joining him in cutting and setting gems.

Journal of Zerris Lashedwrung Felsite 11, 202

The some idiot set off the imp into starting a swamp fire. One of Labs' assistants, the Metalcrafter, died along with a kitten. I immeditately ordered everyone into the outpost to wait out the flames.

Journal of Zerris Lashedwrung Felsite 19, 202

The outpost milita report that the hatch cover is starting to get warm. At least except for the mutt still up there and the loss of the metalcrafter everyone seems to be in a good mood. Even Jeffers threw another party to get mind's off the fire raging through the area separated from us by a single layer of earth. I've placed an order for a coffin to be built. So that once the flames fade we can reclaim his body and give him a proper burial.

I've set aside a coffin for the cat as well. If only to cheer up our hunter who owned the poor thing.

Journal of Zerris Lashedwrung Felsite 26, 202

The entry hatch cooled down enough to risk a look. The fires are still raging but they are far to the north of us now. Surprisingliny the mutt at the entrance survived only mildly singed. I've permitted everyone to work outside again.

Scouting to the south show alot of dead animals as well as a dead imp. Apparently the alligator tried to eat the damned thing with explosive results. The swamp is a charred wasteland outside, only the trees surviving and even then they show signs of burning.

Ascubis Lanceblood achieved legendary status in mining this week. And Keith was deposed as Officer to the guard under Pete. A pair of dwarves became Elites they are now in charge of the company with Keith answering to them.

Journal of Labs entry 5:
       Not a good time in the past weeks. I lost an assistant to those damn fire imps and now the swamp is a charred mess. New guards are sprouting up all over the place. Still no word from Zerris concerning a pet bird.
                End of entry.

(Just wondering, what has Nivm Giltauthor found and worked with so far in the way of gems? Any large gems or finished works? I also find I keep running into places where I am wishing I could pursue his relations list at will, and other details.)

 9th of Granite, 202 at Soothedcrafts;
  I sit here in my meager room, dizzy from exertion. If only I had started sooner I wouldn't get tired so easily. There are just so many treasures to find, and rock is so hard! Well, we hit native aluminum today, and I am told that must be mined out before I can make any more exploratory shafts.

Nivm then takes up his copper pick from the chest-top, puts on his -insert Nivm's current headwear-, and gets to work.

8th of Slate, 202 at Soothedcrafts;
  I took a bit of a break today and went out to see this fire imp that everyone has been so worried about. I was expecting some horrible demon, but the thing isn't even as tall as I am! One hit from my pick to his skull and he'd be dead. I would have gone after him, but there are far too more important things to be doing...like perfecting that new deposit of -insert last gem mined here-.

 20th of Slate, 202 at Soothedcrafts;
  The bone carver threw a party today, I took the opportunity to thank Labs for his patience. Being as parties are always so boring, other than getting more drink, I got back to my gems soon after.

 23rd of Slate, 202 at Soothedcrafts;
  After getting over the initial rage of having to compete for my jewels, and the flashbacks of that tiny room at the Mountainhome, I have realized that this means there will be people working
under me. True, I might not be able to work personally with each gem, but the number of treasures that can be completed will be doubled, perhaps tripled. Before long, the stockpiles will overflow with finished works bedecked in gems. The world will be held in awe of what we can create!

 11th of Felsite, 202 at Soothedcrafts;
  Today I saw why people were in such a fuss over that little imp. I was amazed how quickly the damp swamps took to the flame, one would think the foul slime was made from still. Except for the woodcutters now locked inside complaining, I am unaffected by this development. One can always keep working in the earth.

Imagine a cool peice of sky-blue and milk-white marble about 3cm by 2cm and by 0.5cm, containing a tiny 2mm malacolite crystal. Now imagine the miles of metamorphic rock it's embedded in that no pick or chisel will ever touch. Then, imagine that those miles will melt back into their mantle long before any telescope even refracts an image of their planet. The watchers will be so excited to have that image too.

Hmm.. I need to migrate the saves to a new copy of DF.. with a graphics pack that I can actually SEE the things at a decent size rather than the tiny little things that are currently there. Any suggestions?

Also how do I get the butcher shops set up properly? I can't seem to figure out how to get them to work right.
