Farmer Pete already is becoming a badass. If he lives long enough, can he become the weaponsmaster of the fortress? (Legendary in at least three things)

Once he gets a replacement for both woodcutter and carpenter I don't mind having him switch to military. Heck he may make a better sheriff than the current prospect..

Journal of Labs entry 2:
Yes! I finally got some metal this season, I'm looking forward to winter when I'm by my cozy forge and everyone else is out in the swamp. Another thing, some kid came along with the migrants this year. He calls himself a metalcrafter but I'll be the judge of that. Besides his beard is only half as long as mine.
           End of entry.

Can I randomly take the Gem Cutter? Name him "Nivm Nevmdell", and aim his character to be prejudiced for coincidences that make him seem elvish. If you run out of gems for him to cut, set, and sell, give him a pick so he can mine them himself. Give him a confrontation with the leader over attempting to dig deeper with a staircase from his own room.

Then, imagine that those miles will melt back into their mantle long before any telescope even refracts an image of their planet. The watchers will be so excited to have that image too.

Journal of Zerris Mengulzest Moonstone 1, 201

Winter is now upon us, and all it does it make the swamp bareable outside. I had a head count done once again. Three snailmen and two slugmen. And the alligator is gone once again. There seems to be a definite pattern to their movements, I'm thinking they move through the area in varying numbers as they migrate with the seasons.

The doors were finally installed for the first time yesterday. So the founding seven were able to officially claim their rooms. Also the tables are done for the dining room. Just need the chairs and we can finally eat in style. I also moved one table into my office, least it will serve as a desk.

I also placed an order for several swords. I feel getting us armed would be a good thing for the outpost since we still have to finish the perimiter wall. Speaking of which I also orded the creation of the southern part of the moat. Once the draw bridge is laid we can work on sealing closed the rest of it.

Journal of Zerris Mengulzest Moonstone 7, 201

Today is the first day I write this log in my new office. I still need a door but I have both a chair and a desk. For now that will have to do. As Ascubis concentrates on making chairs, cabinets, and chests for the private rooms I have time now to really do an inventory of Soothedcraft's stocks.

Journal of Zerris Mengulzest Moonstone 11, 201

Jeffers suggested putting cage traps in front of the doors on each floor. Very good idea actually in case the thieves bypass the first level to the second. I gave him the go ahead to start.

Journal of Zerris Mengulzest Moonstone 18, 201

Another Kobold was spotted today. However after getting hit with a stone fall trap it ran off before either Pete OR the Recruit could catch up to it. I can't wait till the wall is complete. Then we can direct it to one spot.. and line that spot with death traps.

Journal of Zerris Mengulzest Moonstone 22, 201

Ascubis informed me that the cabinets are finally all done. The first batch was sent to the private rooms. After this it should be the chests he works on next.

Journal of Zerris Mengulzest Opal 26, 201

Labs and his assistant have finally finished smelting copper enough that he's started forging swords. One of which he kept. Considering he's our smith I won't begrudge him keeping anything he makes. The slug and snailmen are still playing musical numbers it seems. Though I'm glad they are the only ones who are. I've given the go ahead to gather refuse from outside and add it to the trash pile. at least that means we can make some kobold bone items now.

Journal of Zerris Mengulzest Obsidian 22, 201

Pete reports he got annoyed by yet another Kobold today. This time he cleaved off its arms and legs with such force it flew back several feet before he went and cleaved in its skull. He is quite the blood thirsty woodcuter. I'm starting to think he'd make a much better sheriff than the Peasant I drafted as a guard. I've ordered a second Iron battle axe made for him as a reward.

Office of Zerris Mengulzest Obsidian 28, 201

Sitting at his desk, papers and reports piled on every available surface. A large ledger open in front of him, Zerris grumbled as he finished the the last bit of the log for the first year. As nice as it was to have an office, it was aggrevating  having to deal with all the paper work that passed over his desk everyday.

The progress reports on the various tasks. And keeping an accurate account of just how much supplies and wealth they actually had. He found himself spending more and more of his time in the small office than outside. So far it seemed that while the first six who came with him were at tad on the eccentric side in some cases. They were not the insane idiots he'd had to deal with in the passed.

A commotion in the dinning hall just down the hall drew his attention from his work. He arched a brow as Pete dragged into the office one of the seven that made up of Migrant Wave One as he called them in the records. If he wasn't mistaken it was the one that claimed he was a gem cutter. "Evenin' Pete.. what brings you and.. Nivm was it? To my office at this time of night?"

It was quite amusing watching the bundle of nerves that was Pete. Ones that made him the nightmare of at least two Kobolds he'd killed before they knew what hit them. "I found this idiot trying to dig through the floor of the Kennels to the third subfloor with."

I blinked at them surprised. "Why didn't he just use the stairs? They are right next to the Kennels."

Standing up the younger dwarf dusted himself off. "It's Nivm Nevmdell Gilt-"

"I don't need to know more than your first name, Giltauthor. I'm quite aware of who you are. What I want to know is why you didn't use the stairs to go down to the next floor."

The young dwarf hrmphfed at Zerris' interruption. "As you know I am a well renown gem cutter. I've been here for months with you having me do nothing but haul rocks. You've not even been mining since the copper vein was found. I'm tired of waiting for you to build me a workshop. Nor mining for any gems. I demand you do both!"

The two older dwarves just stared at the younger one before Pete commented. "My duties have me either at my workbench or outside getting wood or teaching those idiot kobolds to stay away." He crossed his arms. "Even I know that your workshop was the next one up to be built."

The younger dwarf blinked for a moment as he processed that. "Well what about the mining for more gems?"

"Both Ascubis and I have been busy." Zerris responded. "Or would you rather still have to stand with no table or chairs when you eat your food? Or no alcohol in the stocks? Ascubis is single minded when he starts a task. Right now thats masonry, a few months ago it was practically non-stop mining. I've finally been able to get the paperwork done from last spring. And I had to do without an office for most of the year. You still haven't answered why you weren't using the stairs that are right next to were you are sleeping."

"I was determined to find the gems you commoners aren't bothering to find."

Zerris sighed, just great he had to deal with some noble's nephew. Why couldn't they send the more reasonable dwarves. Sure the hell hole back at the Moutainhome was over crowded but come on. Grumbling he pulled out a blank work order and filled it out and handed to the pompous young prat. "Here.. take this to Labs, he'll forge you a pick if you want to find the damned gems so much then you can go find them yourself. Just stick to the mining plans, I don't want Soothedcrafts to end up like Ancientbells did."

Nivm took the order glancing over it before looking at the outpost leader. "And what happened to them?"

"They didn't bother to be careful where they dug. And went straight down into a demon pit. One that was impossible to reseal. If you find any adamintine you are to stop what your doing. You are to report it to either Ascubis who is our chief miner or myself. You are not to continue on a head and risk unleashing horrors from hell. Do you understand me Nivm?"

The young dwarf gulped a moment before nodding to which Zerris continued. "And do not dig stairs in unauthorized locations. It completely ruins our internal security. We may not have many annoyances beyond the occational kobold, and the slug and snailmen may currently ignore us. But there is an alligator that passes by from time to time and I really don't want to have to worry about that thing getting in here."

The young dwarf nodded again before leaving the office. Zerris looked to Pete with a sigh. "You do realise that if I make you sheriff once elections come around that you'll have to deal with this shit with out me don't you?"

The Woodcutter just laughed heartily as he too left the office, leaving Zerris go grumble. "Gods I need a drink."

OOC: Okay feel free to post your own end of year reports along with your journal entries. As well as work order requests and whatever paperwork you think poor Zerris needs for the next season. Starting after this last season log I'm going to do like a season a day if I can. To give anyone who wants time to rp their interactions with each other or make journal entries.

So far I've only really done a lot of filler entries since first year not much is happening. So each major project that was started like workshops going up and what not were added. The only real interesting stuff were the four kobold incidents.

The one where the caravan showed up, and the Kobold group appeared on the civilization screen. The first one where Pete killed one, the one where the rock traps injured one and made it flee. And the last one that Pete sent flying three squares away before he killed it. and yes, it left its arms and legs behind when he hit it when I quickly switched him to military long enough to get rid of it. Damn things popped up right next to him both times he made a kill.

And yes I added in the snail, and slugmen movements because they did indeed enter and leave the map. As did an alligator that would show up then vanish then show up again a few times a season. The Imps and Magnaman however remained put. I'm lucky the vent though open to the surface is actually one level down. So not likely to get forest fires.

Journal of Labs entry 3:
Today as i was showing my assistant how to make a shortsword, that creepy Elf-like jeweler comes into my forge waving a work order in my face and demanding a pick. I was seconds away from showing him the inside of the forge when i saw it was signed by Zerris. These short bearded migrants are beginning to get on my nerves.

I am slightly confused, I didn't think there was a 30th of Obsidian...but I just used the wiki. I am going to translate it into the date I think you might be at.

 2nd of Granite at Soothedcrafts:
A pick! Not only will I have a workshop to perfect my jewels, but I can ensure a supply of them as well! I do hope it is made of iron instead of copper, I didn't get a chance to see how much of each are in the stocks. This will be the first time I get a pick of any sort; the miners back at the Mountainhome never let me have such a wonder, mocking my meager beard and soft muscles. If they had just let me work away stone for gems whenever there were shortages I would have strength as great as the most flawless diamond! I can do that now, and maybe make some complete works. I was never able to use the gems I worked with for anything, it was always onto my bench from one door, and out the other. Here I will be able to take one of my gems strait from the mountain, and see all the way to its new resting place...perhaps in one of those rock rings I spotted that Hamstre' fellow making. I need to look into that.
I heard the stories of adamantine, I know what to do if I hit a vein. Zerris didn't have to tell me so. Why should I care anyway? There are no gems in adamantine, as far as heard anyway. And there are...demons...No. No reason to care at all.....but what precious thing would form in the supposedly almighty ore?

(As you can see, I want him to go searching for gems whenever there aren't any, and eventually hit the adamantium. First get scared of it, then go back to assorted fantasies involving what could form in it. And mine it anyway, then get killed. This of course would be much later, I plan on going into his obsession with gems and their uses, and then into him proving his dwarfyness. I am actually new to even this minor kind of role playing, so don't expect anything to mesh well.)

Jeffer's Journal, Entry 2:

That year went by in a flash. I'm very pleased with zerris' understanding of the need for more traps. He's allowed me to set up traps all around the fortress, which is great.

It seems like ages ago when I was trapped in that dirty old fortress, having to share a tiny room with my entire family, jumping at the opportunity to eat dirty plump helmets, slurping up stagnant water whenever possible, and worst of all, not being allowed to use the extent of my mechanical talents.

(I am switching to the translated names for the dwarves.)

Journal of Zerris Lashedwrung Granite 1, 202

Once again it is the first of spring, and I am seriously considering authorizing an exploration down five levels to make the first residental district for our outpost. This way the Founding Seven, myself among them can move to larger rooms and leave our old ones to the First Migrant Wave. At least before the teniments are completed.

That should allow us to have all our workshops on the upper levels. and our vaults and tombs even further down. However have to go slowly to make sure we are not directly above a demon pit like Ancientbells had been.

Last night I had to deal with the problems of that wannabe-Elf Giltauthor. The boy didn't seem to understand what the honest work a dwarf can do when they arrive. I sent him to Labs for a pick and told him if he wants to find the gems he's free to mine himself. I have no doubt he'll be wishing he kept his mouth shut by the time Ascubis is done with him.

I sent a couple of drinks down to Labs' forge for both him and his assistant for having to put up with the pompous prat. From what I hear they nearly chucked Giltauthor into the smelter when he showed up. Would have served him right if they had, however I don't want either of them annoyed at me.

Hopefully mining for gems will keep the Elf-fetishist out of our hair for some time. I'm surprised though that he hasn't taken to shaving his beard to look more like an elf  considering how much he dresses like one.

Journal of Zerris Lashedwrung Granite 3, 202

Another vein of native copper was found today. Which should make Labs even happier then the booze I've been sending down there to help them deal with Giltauthor as he waits for the copper pick to be forged. I think once that little idiot is busy mining I'll have another iron pick forged for Ascubis. That would mean both he and I would be the only two with one instead of just me.

The bonus that it would give us an extra miner isn't lost on me either. Still the chief miner should have at least a better pick than the copper one he currently has.

Farmer Pete Gildtree seemed quite pleased to have a second axe. Though as we are overflowing with wood he's taken mostly to filling the small water pond i had made inside in lue of a well. Still however since he's the one who goes outside the most besides the Recruit standing guard by the entrance. He needs all the weapons he can get in case something decides it wants to turn him into a chew toy. Before he turns it into bloody smear.

The Recruit handed me the latest report on the local animal movements this morning. Apparently all the Snailmen have left the area for awhile. The alligator is thankfully no where to be seen again. The downside is now we have six slugmen prowling about.

The next section of construction on the wall has begun. Once Ascubis is done teachign the elf-dwarf how to hold a pick I'll have him start churning out lots and lots of blocks to at least finish the first level of it. Work on the southern part of what will be the moat continues. Soon it will be wide enough for us to build a drawbridge over it. Once that's in place we can being pathing a road down toward the brook.

Journal of Zerris Lashedwrung Granite 9, 202

Interestingly the elf-dwarf seems to be really into mining once shown how. Even if he keeps exhuasting himself. In fact today we struck or first new metal. Native Aluminum. As well as another patch of rock crystal.

Today I authorized tentative escavation of the next level down. to see wether or not that part is safe.

Journal of Zerris Lashedwrung Granite 12, 202

The Miller it seems decided today would be the ideal day to throw a party. And can't say I blame her. The occasional party is always good for morale. Drinks and food flowed for a few hours today as everyone just relaxed for a bit.

Journal of Zerris Lashedwrung Granite 13, 202

It's a good thing we had that party yesterday. The Recruit sighted an elven caravan enroute to us. The elves, they can either be annoyance or a very good source of wood. However ALOT of what they normally sell is useless. Hopefully the Elven Liasion isn't an asshole.

Ordered our craft goods, three of our least well made swords and a few mechanisms brought to the depot for trade. They surprising also wanted a few of the bone items I didn't think they'd consider. We were able to get a few seeds and some interesting booze. Thus I offloaded more of our bone items on them for a bit more food drink and seeds.

In order to insure good relations I also gave them one of the mechanisms free. Least I could do for them informing us of a near by Goblin group known as 'The Jackal of Lesions'

Journal of Zerris Lashedwrung Granite 19, 202

One of the fire imps decided to have fun today. Started a massive forest fire after leaving the magma vent. The annoying part is the elves were here still. However they can't blame us for the damage to the environment this time. The partially completed wall deflected most of the flames from our area. However some fires still kept going straight for the trade depot.

The flames went right passed Ascubis as he was adding to the wall. As well as our Animal Caretaker. Neither seemed the slight bit burnt thank goodness beyound a light singing. I think however it ws the Caretaker who got too damned close the the imps. I've told Pete to see if he can take care of it. As well as any other dangerous animals currently in the area.

Journal of Zerris Lashedwrung Granite 22, 202

Jeffers who'd started to date Hamster died to day due to the fire setting off one of his traps. We consoled her as arrangement for his funer-

Journal of Zerris Lashedwrung Granite 9, 202

I woke this morning with a very odd start moving into my office and blinked at the log in surprise. There were entries on it I hadn't yet made. The last thing I remembered was dreaming of flames engulfing everything. I immediately ordered a halt to the lower escavations as well as all mining. If what I saw in the dream and if these entries are accurate then in ten days Jeffers will end up dead. Not the most pleasant of ideas. No one else however has seemed to notice anything differently. In fact they are all acting just as I dreamed them doing so when the first Granite 9th entry was written in my dream.

There is somehting odd about this swamp, as such a thing has never before happened in my experience. I'm going to make sure mister Animal Caretaker stays inside the outpost until I know one way or another what is going on.

One thing that is obvious now that I am aware of it. Jeffer's and Hamsters have become lovers. If we can keep him alive maybe they will become married.

I've drafted both the Caretaker and Dissector. That should keep them either on guard duty or training. The Recruit is their squad leader for now.

I've also ordered Pete to go out and see if there is in fact a fire imp outside the magma vent. And if so then kill it before it starts the fire. All dwarves are confined inside the outpost until either the fire is passed OR the damned imp is dead.

Journal of Zerris Lashedwrung Granite 13, 202

Just like in the dream the elves showed up on the same exact day however. Even with them up there. I'm not going to let anyone go out till after the 19th. If only to make sure Jeffer's doesn't die like he had in the dream and mysterious log entries.

Journal of Zerris Lashedwrung Granite 19, 202

On the day the fires were supposed to start they didn't, and Jeffers and Hamster actually got married. Which is much better that the outcome hinted at by the jounal. Now just need to wait till after the 22nd and I can be sure whether or not to let people out again.

OOC: First month of spring plus a scum save to save Jeffers who bled to death along with one of the dogs when the traps went off on them.
