Journal of Zerris Mengulzest Granite 1, 201
It has been rough journey from the Mountain home. The six dwarves have accompanied to this mosquito invested swamp seem to be relatively sane. Luckily most of the bogs are dried out at this time. So we don't have to worry too much about leaks yet. And there is a nice brook to the south of our new camp.

There is indeed a magma vent in the area, only problem is that it opens to the surface. A quick scouting of it shows several fire imps and a magma man. Hopefully they will stay deep inside and not bother us for some time.

We have also sighted snailmen in the vicinity. Though not many yet. Again hopefully they won't bother us too much before we get some traps up for defense.

Giving Ascubis the rough sketch out of how the first level should be I sent him off to find the best place to begin digging out our new home. At least the first level of it. Once he puts down the Forge and Wood Furnace he can start working on that.

We set up some temporary above ground stockpiles for our supplies. Last thing we need is all our food to rot while waiting for the main store rooms to be finished. Once the axe is forged I'll send Farmer Pete to do his thing to the trees in the area. And once the second pick is forged I'll be joining Ascubis in our mining efforts, I may not be as skilled as him but I'll at least not be accused of sitting on my ass even if I am the current head of our little group.

Journal of Zerris Mengulzest Granite 7, 201

The forge was made however we are kind of stuck since rather than build the furnace as well Ascubis charged off to start digging. Thanks to the fact the layer is all sand we now have one complete room for our first farm laid cleared out. I told Fori to go start to work on that. Since it will be awhile until we have an axe I told Farmer Pete to make a temporary carpenter shop and churn out a few beds since the kennel room is also done and we can sleep there until our private quarters are made.

Journal of Zerris Mengulzest Granite 12, 201

Ascubis still hasn't made the wood furnace yet. Though the fact he finished the primary food storage chamber today shows he has at least a similar priority in keeping food from rotting as I do. I and the others immediately began moving the food stores below ground.

Journal of Zerris Mengulzest Granite 26, 201

The wood furnace is still not complete, at least the beds are done in the make shift barracks. However the inital dining hall and the chambers that will eventually be our private quarters are also finished today. I must say Ascubis is single minded when it comes to mining out our home. I plan to expand into the lower levels slowly if only so we get some mason work out of him. Fori seems happy to be planting our primary food source of Pump Helmets however.

Journal of Zerris Mengulzest Slate 4, 201

The rest of the first level of the outpost is fully dug out. Hopefully now the furnace is next on Ascubis's priority list. We need an axe for Pete and a second Pick for me so I can help mining out the next level. The finished goods storeroom is completed though for now i'm also using it to store everything except stone. If only to get all our goods below ground.

I've just gotten word that he has finally completed the damned furnace. Time to have him start exploring the next level down for stone. Which apparently is the Felsite from the survey report.

Journal of Zerris Mengulzest Slate 16, 201

Ascubis is diligently mining out the level beneath us. Where I plan to move the primary furniture and raw material stock piles to. As well as the work shops that are currently still on the surface. I had Fori begin preparing a second farm for a different plant, Quarry Bushes, as well. Labs however hasn't begun to make fuel or even forge the axe or second pick as of yet today. Though given how much work we've been doing hauling stuff everywhere I'm not too upset if he's taking a nap before doing the work. We have plenty of time till winter to get the last things inside. There has however been an increase in the number of snailmen sighted in the area.

Journal of Zerris Mengulzest Felsite 10, 201

Wonderful news both my pick and Pete's axe are complete. Not in time to help Ascubis to mine out the storage cavern beneath our feet but at least next time I can help him mine future chambers. I've set him to build a mason's shop down there and start churning out stone blocks. once the first hatch cover and door is built. For the simple reason. I dont want those snailmen getting in here.

Journal of Zerris Mengulzest Hematite 1, 201

I've ordered both the Forge and Wood Furnace to be dismantled for now. Since we won't need them until we find or are able to trade for more metal. Once the beds are completed for our rooms I will have Pete dismantle the carpenters shop as well. I do not like him working out there in the open just to make beds. Sure the snailmen are docile at the moment. But we don't know how long that will last. Once we have kennels made I plan to have our dogs trained as wardogs. And have at least one assigned to Pete for when he goes out for wood.

The main hatch and door are now in place. So we don't have to worry so much about vermin getting in. Will need to post however a wardog next to the hatch once we have some. In the mean time I've designated the four corners where the inital perimeter wall will be. Once we have enough blocks we'll be able to wall ourselves in with only one access point in the wall. Should make defending the outpost easier, until we get some migrants to draft as soldiers.

Then we can get the bones Hamster wants to carve and of course start trapping snailmen for her to butcher. I don't like the fact she's stuck having to haul stuff since we don't have need of a butchery just yet.

Journal of Zerris Mengulzest Hematite 2, 201

This morning when I awoke I found the cat we'd brought to keep down vermin sleeping at the foot of the bed I was using. Since then it's been following me around when it's not chasing mice or lizards. I shall call the little guy Sarvesh Dastatasiz.

Journal of Zerris Mengulzest Hematite 5, 201

The Craftdwarf's Workshop is complete. I set Hamster to go start carving the bones from Sarvesh's little hunting trips into the food stocks. Hmm.. might see how good she is at rock carving too.

The bogs which filled up during the rain of the passed few weeks are finally drying out again. Only good thing about being in as hot a swamp as we are. Though it is much cooler below ground.

Journal of Zerris Mengulzest Hematite 9, 201

I've told both Jeffers and Ascubis to get started on making the Trade Depot when they have a chance to. I'd rather have it up and ready before Autumn when the first caravan is supposed to arrive. Since that will give us a chance to insure we get what we need before the first migrants come. I truly hope some come because otherwise things will be slow going with just the seven of us.

Journal of Zerris Mengulzest Hematite 23, 201

Slugmen have been spotted entering the area, as well as a damned alligator. I've warned Pete to becareful when he heads out of the outpost to work. Last thing we need is for him to get eaten. I've increased the priority on the perimeter walls.

Journal of Zerris Mengulzest Malachite 18, 201

In order for the southern wall to be built we discovered we need to wall off half of a one of the bogs. Hopefully this will allow us to build the rest of the wall over it without having to worry about creatures coming in under the wall at that point.

Both the Finished Goods and Block stockpiles look much better with bins in them holding all the stuff Hamster and Acubis have been making this summer. I hope Hamster's craft items fetch a good price with the caravan. we need rope badly. Both to build a well house over the brook and second to chain one of the dogs at the main entrance.

The second set of beds are all complete, once more doors are available we will be able to start picking out rooms for ourselves. One room however is already set aside for my office. Of course some of the others have already started sleeping in the doorless bedrooms already. We have enough beds for the first wave of migrants. At least as long as they don't put us over twenty dwarves.

Journal of Zerris Mengulzest Galena 16, 201

I was just informed our booze stocks are getting dangerously low. I immedately grabbed my pick and began carving out a new chamber next to one of our farms for a the sole purpose of housing our still. I've been so busy planning our defenses that I completely missed our drink supplies! Ascubis also seemed just determined to get the still room complete as I. Between the two of us the room was completed. Once Pete constructed the still, Fori began brewing up a storm.

Journal of Zerris Mengulzest Galena 19, 201

The booze stocks are once again back to the levels they were at our arrival to Soothedcraft. I placed a standing work order for more booze, so barrels will be filled as fast as they are emptied. The perimeter wall is getting a bit more done. The southwest corner is complete. Now just need to get it to connect to the northwest and south east corners. So far the alligator, the Slugmen and Snailmen have ignored us if they even noticed our presence. There haven't been any sign of either kobolds or goblins yet. Thank the gods for small blessings.

The snailmen seem to be moving out of the area. Displaced it seems by the Slugmen. The Imps and the magma man all seem content to stay down in the magma vent. And other than the occasional insect or lizard pest which Sarvesh dispatches so well everything seems to be actually going quite well for us here. I still haven't permitted the excavation of another level down. I don't know if there are any hidden caverns and after what happened to my cousin I'm wary of going down too far. His group created a outpost and when they dug straight down.. they had the misfortune of digging straight into a demon pit without being able to seal it off at all. At least thats what the few adventurers that have gone there have reported.

We have plenty of loose stone from that one storage cavern Ascubis carved out. We don't need to worry about any more for awhile. And I'd rather us expanding to the sides first. before we do anything about digging deeper.

Journal of Zerris Mengulzest Galena 25, 201

I've had the last workshop outside moved down into the first level of the outpost. It's in the entry hall but it's better down here where Pete only has to go out to cut down more trees than up there where he is exposed to possible attack. I've also placed an order for thirty more barrels. Never can have enough of those.

Jeffer's Journal, Entry 1:

The fortress is coming along pretty well. However, it needs more traps. There must be traps everywhere, if we are to defeat the green menace. Traps must be placed inside hallways, dining rooms, stockpiles, and bedrooms. If we don't have traps, then how are we to remain safe? Traps are vital to our success.

OOC: Can Jeffers have a stonefall trap or a cage trap or something inside his room, next to the door?

Labs' Journal entry 1:

It's nice here, or should I say nicer than that overcrowded hellhole they call a mountainhome. There are nice beds, modest food, we're out of the swamp, and I love the variety of booze our leader brought along. These other dwarves are being quite productive, but i have it easy. All i ever have to do is make my own fuel and smith a pick or two when I get the order. I saw a goddamned walking snail the other day! What's going on?! I should make myself a nice sword to keep under my bed.
    End of entry.

OOC: Hint hint at the sword under the bed bit.

OOC: Don't worry I plan on us all being in steel plate.. first however we need the steel. As for a trap in the room. Maybe once the first seven move into bigger rooms. However current layout is not feasible inside the room. Not if you want both a chest and a cabinet as I try to give all dwarves at least those. I can however set it up just outside your door if you want. Since depending on what room you get, it can guard up to three rooms with one trap.

It's all right, I can wait until he gets a larger room.

Until then however... CONSTANT VIGILANCE.

OOC: Autumn isn't over yet, the caravan successfully got back from our outpost to the Mountainhome. How do I know? Becuase we got migrants only a month or two after the caravan left. Seven of them. So I'm opening naming for incoming dwarves two seasons early.

Journal of Zerris Mengulzest Limestone 1, 201

Autumn has finally arrived. Which means at some point this season the caravan should show up. I informed the others that outpost supplies go first. Then afterwords I'd see if there is any personal items I can get. If not this year then they will get filed into the trade agreement for next year's caravan. That is unless we manage to get what's needed to make it here before then.

I noticed Jeffers talking to Ascubis for a few moments this morning. And when I came back the entry hall was extended just enough for him to wedge a Mechanic's bench in the new alcove. He's since been churning out mechanisms, when I asked he said we didn't have enough traps.

I'm glad I'm not the only one taking our safety seriously. While I work on expanding the wall he's setting up an internal security system it seems. Which actually isn't all that bad an idea.

Labs asked me about getting materials for making swords I was taking a look about on the surface. He's seem to have noticed the Snailmen too. While I don't want go go any deeper incase we are directly over a demon pit, I think Ascubis and I can start hunting for metal deposits.

A brief chat with our chief miner and mason and the pair of us began to dig in concentric squares. Slow going but will give us place for rooms if needed as well as keep us from missing too much. First thing we hit however was a deposite of rock crystal. That will come in handy later definitely.

Journal of Zerris Mengulzest Limestone 7, 201

After quite a bit of digging we found our first metal deposit. Native copper. While weapons made from it won't be all that strong they are still much better than nothing. We marked the location to come back to later once we have a place cleared out for Labs to set up his equipment again.

Journal of Zerris Mengulzest Limestone 13, 201

The caravan from 'The Awe-inspiring Arches' and the liason from King Aloth has finally arrived. I quickly ordered all the crafts plus all but one of the mechnisms be brought up to the depot on the surface. Seems they came south on the other side of the book. Will need to build a road and bridge in that direction later on.

Was able to get several lengths of the needed rope. Some more ale and wine, plus a horse in a cage. The cage can be used to contain the baby animals that have been popping up. Got some iron as well as some gemstones we haven't found yet. Loaded up on more pump helmets since you can never have too much food. And a few other miscellienous items.

For the trade agreement the first thing I asked for was lots of wood. Then steel and iron bars, more of all the seeds. A few swords, couple cows, all the booze we can't make ourselves. Lots of turtle meat, all the barrels they can spare, even though I had Pete make thirty of the things. Never can have too many barrels, and lots of charcoal.

In turn they wanted wooden scepters, large gems, bracelets, hides, idoles, ammunition, headwear, anvils, goblets, and backpacks. While we aren't able to fill everything. The nice thing the liason wasn't an idiot who asked for the same things we wanted.

From the caravan guards comments it seems they ran off a kobold that was lurking around. Thank goodness all of worth is inside. And the main entrance hall is where the dogs all just love to hang out. In case the little bastards try to sneak in.

Either way with two of the new ropes we had. I posted one dog up above right next to the entry hatch. And one right at the door in the entry hall. Hopefully if the kobolds get passed the first they get chowed on by the second. Makes me note however we need to find a new location for the barracks soon. If only to get the kennel room free again.

The merchants of course seemed very pleased with the deals both for the trade agreement and the trading we'd done today. That just means the bugger got a very heavy profit off of us. However I don't mind that much, since we got what we needed at first offer and the merchants will be even more willing to come into to this hot swamp next year.

Journal of Zerris Mengulzest Sandstone 12, 201

The caravan finally left today, I released the horse and caged the camel and all the puppies. That should keep them out of foot until they are old enough to train. It also hopefully will mean we will soon be able to have regular horse meat at least until th cows show up.

It was interesting watching Jeffers begin to set up stone fall traps in the small hallways that lead to our rooms. He only made two so far since he's just limited by the number of mechnisms I sold for supplies. At the very least the sound of the things falling will be a good wake up call if an enemy manages to get inside the outpost and tries to kill us in our sleep.

Did a head count on the Snailmen and Slugmen, as of today there is only one Snailman and four slugmen. Both lower numbers than had been here the previous seasons. It's possible that our outpost is on their migration path. The alligator of course was no where to be seen. Which is a relief. Still though am not stopping progress on the perimeter wall. Once it's finished I am thinking of having a guardhouse built up there. It would be the ideal place to move the barracks to. Of course that means a thicker wall but can not see the draw back in that save for the amount of felsite it would take to build. The wall is thankfully far enough away from the underground constructions that once I expand the lowest level enough. I can safely build a moat around the entire thing with a draw bridge to seal us off in case of attack.

Journal of Zerris Mengulzest Sandstone 23, 201

Jeffers finished the first two stone drop traps and began on the next pair today. Now all the private rooms including the one set aside for my future office are guarded by the traps.

Journal of Zerris Mengulzest Timber 3, 201

It was quite a surprise to see migrants show up this month, a welcome one at that. Seven new dwarves showed up on our door step this morning. Putting us at a happy fourteen total. Apparently our Hamster's crafts and Jeffers mechanisms were more impressive than we'd thought.

For census these are the professions each are currently trained in.

One Animal Caretaker (Wonderful he can run the kennels for me)
One Animal Dissector (An assistant for 'Hamster' maybe)
One Metalcrafter (Looks like Labs may have an assistant too)
One Gem Cutter
One Miller
One Potash Maker
One Peasant

The Peasant was immediately drafted as a soldier. Once he's trained up enough he'll be our sheriff. The miller means Fori can start planting those wheat seeds she'd brought with her. I've also added Founding status to the census records for the first seven of us to live here. Hopefully Ascubis can actually make some doors so we can officially claim our rooms before the newcomers think they are vacant. They can have the Kennel/Barracks. I've also given them MW1 Status so we can keep track of who came when.

Oh and the damned alligator is back.

Journal of Zerris Mengulzest Timber 5, 201

Our first confirmed sighting of a Kobold was today. Luckily the little bastard was chased off by the dog I stationed right next to the entry hatch. So he wasn't able to steal anything. I'm going to have Jeffers put rock traps all around the entrance just before the mutt that should be a really nasty surprise for the next one.

Journal of Zerris Mengulzest Timber 7, 201

We struck pyrolusite while mining today. If this is what I think it is then we may soon have aluminum as yet another metal for use.

Journal of Zerris Mengulzest Timber 10, 201

Farmer Pete got attacked by a Kobold today. But he cleaved through it with his axe before it could hurt him at all. He then got a celibratory drink quench his thirst and get over the annoyance the Kobold caused him. i've ordered that the kobolds things be brought in. At the very least the dagger can be melted down and can get a bit of free profit on it's clothes.

Journal of Zerris Mengulzest Timber 17, 201

The forge is rebuilt and the smelter is built. Still waiting on Jeffers to get the Wood Furnace designed again. And I have Labs and his new assistant smelting down the copper and melting the dagger from the kobold. Now that we have metal being made we can start making weapons.

journal 2:
i was going to ask Zerris to sell the daggger. or use it in one of the traps :D. a few copper swords in our traps wouldn't hurt either . but i better let labs decide on that. seeing as how i am only experienced in masonry and mining i better leave the traps to the experts :) i really should leave some of the mining alone for now and work on masonry.
