If Freud's impact on the world just came from him being a pervert (which is pretty much bullcrap), there would be a lot of more famous porn producers that left a noteable change in the world.

Freud knew his stuff and he was able to use his (sometimes wrongish) theories to great effect.

 Also, a better analogy is not so much the wrong tool as the wrong screw. Depending on where it is, it could be harmless or could cause some problems. Neither case really breaks the machine apart, but neither fixes it.

He has some decent ideas like the id, ego, superego concept. But going from that, I still think psychology is too clunky. Modern psychology is all about seeing the results and reactions of something, rather than the cause. Which is quite lame.
