There was a bill introduced which would give DC a single member in the 435 member house of representatives and zero members in the 100 member senate.  The bill would temporarily expand the house by 2 members, giving another seat to both (arch conservative) Utah and (elite Liberal) D.C. before the 2010 census would redistribute the seats by population in the normal fashion.  However the bill left committee with a "poison pill" amendment which would have repealed D.C.'s gun laws.  (Unlike the states, Congress has nearly unlimited authority over DC.  Usually they chose neglect over actively destroying the city however.)  Thanks to this poison pill, the D.C. voting rights bill is in limbo.  There's also fear that the (5-4 conservative) Supreme Court would strip D.C. of their representation if the bill passed, meaning that Utah would get a vote for a term and D.C. would lose control of it's gun laws but D.C. still wouldn't get representation.  It would take a constitutional amendment or D.C. statehood to get representation after a Supreme Court ruling.

D.C. residents pay more federal taxes per capita then Sweden, more then 30k per person.  But Congress limits the cities ability to collect enough taxes to provide decent services.  Congress is supposed to allocate enough money for the city to operate but allocates far less then the states once you ignore spending on congress itself.  Here is the capitol of the most powerful nation on earth.  The wealth of this city is taxed to the tune of 20 billion dollars a year.  But inside this bastion of wealth and power there are a hundred thousand people living in poverty.

Some stupid notion about geography influencing congress's opinions does not justify stripping more then half a million people of their votes.  D.C. is on congress's doorstep and they have alternatively neglected or harmed the city for as long as it's been a city.  The capitol is a tiny fraction of the cities area.  The half a million people in the rest of the city deserve democracy.

I'm not from D.C. but I lived in Bethesda, Maryland, right next door for a couple years.  I was born in Minnesota and have lived the longest in Easton, Maryland (a town on the eastern, hick half of the state) but have also lived for years in Bethesda and Delaware before going to college in Philadelphia.

Most Americans think that it's called District of Columbia because it was originally owned by the nation of Columbia.

Shock though it may be to find this out, but that is not the case. "Columbia" was pretty much the pre-1900 version of Uncle Sam, and referred to the whole American Continent(s).

That and it's the largest consumer of coffee per capita in the US.

That's also our one square mile of skyline-worthy buildings.  The city stretches over more area than Vermont, but no other building is more than 10 stories tall.
