I'll just say, born San Francisco, raised Petaluma (north of San Francisco) soon living in Davis, CA. It's east of San Francisco, and yes, I have lived in places that are not necessarily described in terms of their compass relationship to San Francisco, like San Diego.

Technically, DC is not a state. Also, it inhabits more of Maryland than Virgina(Being on the north side of the Potomac river).
