Dwarf Fortress Steam Group
« on: May 05, 2009, 12:43:07 am »

If anyone here uses Steam, there's a group you can join that started back in February of 2008. We currently have 247 members and could use a bit more. The aim of the group is to provide a new way for DF players to discuss and ask questions about DF. You'll only see one administrator, because a moderator was recently demoted, but new applicants are being processed.

So if you use Steam, join up! We could always use more knowledgeable members. I'm also open to suggestions pertaining to the operation of the group.

http://steamcommunity.com/groups/dfplayers

Thanks for reading, help us spread the word!

EDIT: Roughly 700 members as of 12/16/2010

Wow.
Type 'Dwarf Fortress' into search, this isn't the only group.
I'll join.

There's already a group. It's the Dwarf Fortress Community. http://steamcommunity.com/groups/dwarfortress

Probably has the most people from this forum already in it.

The difference is member count, the one you mention has ~40 members, the one in the OP has ~250, I call that a difference.

Eh, too bad that I don't have a steam account... ;D
Is there a point in having a steam account at all, if you don't play with Valve's games? I usually buy games directly from the store...

Mmmmmnope.

Edit: Weelllllll, let me restate that. If you don't care about electronic downloads, then no. They don't just distribute Valve games. They have a lot of different publishers selling on steam, and a lot of indie-developers using it to sell. They have a lot of sales and good deals. If that interests you, then yes, you have an okay reason for getting it.

We made one from #bay12games for when we played games on steam, too, back in october 2007, which is http://steamcommunity.com/groups/dwarffortress - and it has the DF initials - However it only has 16 members since we never publicized it elsewhere (and it was invite-only until recently). That said, 6 of the 16 people in it were administrators, and we never had any trouble with any of them (but there were a few people I just wouldn't have given any power to, because they tend to go nuts every so often).

I'd tend to think you'd need more moderators than just 1, especially for a 250-person group, but I'm not volunteering  :P. I have joined the group, though (My steam name is Trafalgar).

Right, I only started this one because at the time, the only other group was private. It's grown up quite a bit, though.

Just what I thought...well like I've said I buy my games directly from the shop, not to mention, that I have an Impulse account...and it's perfectly enough for now...I guess.  :D

Do we need Steam? DF doesn't use it...

mmm, yeah. but many god games are on steam. (not as good as DF, but meh)

besides, putting DF on steam is possible i think, meaning you can easily transfer the file and saves over Pcs.

You can launch DF through steam, which is useful if you play in fullscreen. It works fine.
