Travelling band wagon.
« on: May 04, 2009, 03:54:50 pm »

A new type of depot, Wagon Depot.
The bandwagon is similar to a trade caravan, but instead of carrying trade good, they carry dwarf/diplomats/liason.

1. Diplomat - A diplomat will come with a guarded wagon and drive it into the Wagon depot before exiting to meet with your "leaders".  When they're done meeting, the diplomat will return to the wagon and leave with it.  If the wagon is destroyed, the guard will follow the diplomat (or maybe a diplomat follow a guard) back out the map on foot.

2. Trade Liason - Same as diplomat, except the wagon spawn alongside the trade caravan.

3. Immigrants - A single wagon will contain multiple dwarf and will arrive at your fortress Oregon trail style.

The toad is having a nice relaxing swim.
The goblin mounted on his back, however, is drowning.

For the Trade liason, maybe they should just hitch a ride with the lead wagon, and jump off if there's trouble.

For #3, maybe have multiple wagons in some cases?

I always felt Immigrants should arrive with some food/supplies and tools appropriate to their professions when your fort is still very new, kind of like second wave of settlement.  As you get more established they bring less stuff as your not a 'frontier' fortress anymore.

I'd be satisfied with dwarves arriving with wagons instead of walking the whole way like a herd of cattle.

I like the idea of different types of "caravans" arriving, and having a diplomatic envoy would be a very nice permutation of the basic Trade wagon.

If I could add a few ideas to this?

4. An actual *band* wagon, or in other words, a Medieval minstrel-show, that could arrive at your Fortress and trade it's services (giving good thoughts/moods-as well as some goods, and possibly songs, and training with musical instruments, in exchange for goods, maybe this could also double as something like a postal service? And it could also possibly do something to spread the reputation and increase the fame of your Fortress and it's inhabitants, which might at some point be mechanically (or just thematically) advantageous, and would also be very medievally thematic. Reputation was very important back then, and it was also harder to spread, because of the limitations on travel.).

Subforms of this "band wagon" could include the "traveling medicine show" and the "grassroots revival". These would be identical to the basic minstrel show, but with the addition of a Physician Noble (who may or may not be a total quack) for the medicine show, and with the addition of an evangelical priest, for the grassroots revival.

Goods could include dubious "medicine"-which could often mostly consist of alchohol, but might occasionally be efficacious-(in the case of a traveling medicine show), religious memorabilia-often fake, or cheaply made, but occasionally spiritually potent-(for the grassroots revival), musical instruments, and various exotic goods/toys.

Services could possibly extend to hiring on minstrels over long periods of time, medical services, or having your Fortress be blessed/converted/baptised to the "new religion".

5. A traveling circus. This would be somewhat similar to the minstrel show, in that it would mostly trade entertainment services, with a few goods and possibly some training. It also could include a "sideshow", which might buy and sell exotic animals, and possibly caged critters as well. Children might occasionally run away with the circus, and entertainers might be hired by the Fortress, either long-term, or for special events. The circus could be overseen by a Dungeon Master Noble (who would be able to tame exotic critters).

It might (probably rarely) be possible to purchase exotic critters from a traveling circus that have the PET tag, that otherwise wouldn't be able to become pets. So you might have the opportunity to purchase a pet bear, or even a pet elephant, from the circus.

Yeah, nomadic slavers would be good (maybe they're out scouring the countryside for arena victims, for another Civ?), and so would wandering mercenary parties, both of which you could either hire/engage in trade with, or else piss off in myriad number of ways.

Mercenaries, if angered, would likely put up a good fight--although they probably wouldn't stick around long enough to seige you--while slavers would be more likely to run away, but they'd also be likely to call up the army to seige you in the near-future, since you'd have shown yourselves to be likely arena-fodder.

I totally love the idea of immigrants arriving in wagons.  Annoying to pause through a wave of 15 just to figure out what the hell you got.

Similarly, we should be able to build wagons, for use above ground as mobile stockpiles (the ox carts, for those of you who played as the Norse in Age of Mythology).  Underground would work too I guess.  I'm more interested in building mine carts underground.

I just got an interesting idea from this, should be implementable without a significant amount of changes.
A mobile stockpile.
Basically a wagon that behaves like a stockpile.  So this is what it would be like...
1. You can construct a wagon/cart.  At this point it will look just like a bin.
2. You need to attach an animal to it (maybe limited to animal with a certain size).
3. You can move the wagon in a similar way to military squad "station".
4. The wagon has two states, "packed" and "unpacked".  In packed mode, the item within it is considered the cart/wagon's inventory.  In unpacked mode, the wagon/cart is considered as a stockpile.  In either mode, the wagon/cart's "stockpile" setting can be modified.
5. The wagon can be set to "load" or "unload", which only take effect when the wagon/cart is in unpacked mode.  In "load" state, the wagon act as a stockpile.  In "unload" state, the stockpile act as if it allows nothing.

6. Buildable wagons for long distance transport of goods. Also known as booze carts. Also known as booze bombs. Catch an imp, chain him by entry way in room sealed by a bridge. Goblins/Elfs come, send in booze wagon, lower bridge. You know the rest... ;)

Yes, i want slaves, I want Elves to do all of the hauling jobs so my dwarves can do something useful for once. If slaves are implemented, they should be in a permanent bad mood, and might rise up against their oppressors if they are abused or forced to work in harsh(miasma/smoke filled) areas for too long.

YES!  Buying elf/goblin/kobold slaves and putting them to work as haulers/cleaners, or keeping them in cages in the zoos... or setting them against each other in pit fights!  And all for the entertainment (and subsequent good feelings) of my dwarves.

I forsee a purchased human child slave, kept in a cage until maturity, then being set to work in the pits fighting, eventually making a break for freedom and killing several dwarves int he process before escaping.  Another wonderful depth of flavour to add to my (very slowly progressing) DF stories.

I think if slaves are in then there should be an option to free them.  Imagine an emancipation scenario, in which you are trying to gain the human's favor by freeing those captured by slavers.  Or doing that to save fellow dwarves.

Or even cases where you set out to free the (generic) slaves...only to discover that they're leechmen, or goblins, or ogres, and suddenly you've got a couple dozen very grateful, very homeless monsters on your doorstep.

The possibility of protecting, feeding/clothing, and incorporating what might actually end up being some very useful ex-slaves, while dealing with the enemy (humans) that held them captive, is appealing to me.
