If he is innocent he cannot be punished ...

Then again by that definition no one can punish the child's father for throwing a tantrum and murdering the culprit, can they?

Wait. Is this the "Anarchy" thing I've heard about?
No, Anarchy is when no one, no where gets punished for anything because there is no governing body to do the punishing. In our system, demons are punished for killing many dwarves and humans, and given medals for killing elves

You're half right. Anarchy is the lack of a governing body. People may still be punished, but all punishment is carried out outside of any lawful body. Essentially trial by mob.

Think wild west without a sherriff

So I WAS right after all.

The spinning Elf soul strikes the Elf Druid in the chest! His heart is pierced! his left lung is pierced! his right lung is pierced! He is propelled backwards by the force of the blow! Elf Druid strikes an obstacle and explodes into gore!

In all seriousness, I already kill as few sentient creatures as possible. I believe in self-defense -- orcs, etc. die for attacking my fort (although preferentially I seal myself in) -- and in eating meat (although usually only when I have 200 dogs). I don't send my dwarves into danger if I can help it, and I savescum sometimes even if it's a really minor dwarf who dies.

As an aside, never ever name your dwarves after your friends. I did that once. It's even more painful for me to deal with the death of a friend-named dwarf than an ordinary dwarf.

I suspect this soul thing is added to build latter on more stuff on it, rather than having an immediate functionality in itself

Great. Now those bloody arrows will pierce your lungs, heart AND soul simultaniously.

Now I'm imagining the [CREATURE:CUPID] raw and its possible effects on Dwarven relationships...

Urist McMarried has been smitten by a cupid's arrow,
Urist McMarried cancels being in love with Melbil McMarried: is admiring Zon McAnotherBloke'sBird

Imagine, if you could destroy the soul, maybe the creature could transform into a hideous undead creature...

Like if you destroy a elves soul, it transforms into a zombie!

When magic is put in you may be able to trap the souls of people and make them do your bidding (essentially put them under your control). Adventurer mode would rock with that in.

Adventurer:Soul nom!

I agree with Urist. Steampunk is like Darth Vader winning Holland's Next Top Model. It would be awesome but not something I'd like in this game.
Unfortunately dying involves the amputation of the entire body from the dwarf.

Indeed.  I foresee the ability to draw out and/or capture and store souls in large cut gems.  Said souls could be used to imbue magical effects in weapons and armor, melded to a sentient creature's own soul for absolutely monstrous magical growth, or used for animating corpses and golems via necromancy.  Or perhaps fired from a new siege engine... *shudders*

Of course, you're right.  This is all hinging on the eventuality of magic.
