Shorten "[More]" length - let "Idlers&quo
« on: October 21, 2006, 10:00:00 am »

Doren Limultat is really getting on my nerves.

He engraves masterpieces every second or so.

That should be a good thing.

But he announces it to the world every time, causing me to be in a never-ending battle just to see how many idlers I have.

Okay, okay, Doren, I get it, you're the world's greatest engraver, kudos to you.  Now please shut the hell up.

Or, preferably, please consider shortening the length of a message before "[More]" kicks in, so that "Idlers" can stay onscreen forever.  Thanks.

I get that with livestock giving birth and my two badly invalid dwarves going unconscious.

Thinking about this some more... is there a button to clear out the message (i.e. immediately go back to "idlers")?

If so, that wouldn't be so bad.

As is, I'm going to my "units" or "jobs" screen every couple of seconds, merely to get "idlers" back.

Almost fits the thread: I have a dwarf that keeps going unconscious.  After being attacked by a vorpal racoon, he had superficial wounds to his head and left eye.  His head has healed.  His eye has not (~1 year later).  Will this ever heal?  Will he ever stop going unconscious due to his scratched eye area?

Also, why does he not complain that he keeps on passing out?  I know I would.

Is the color of the eye wound light gray or dark gray? Maybe his eye got ripped out.

Instead of complaining about this why not ask for the idlers to be moved?

Edit:damn I feel like an idiot thats what you were trying to do except for w who suggested that it reappears instaneneously.

I've been trying to figure out what you meant by this; I'm still not sure that I do, so I apologize if I misunderstood.

But I've come up with an idea for what you might have meant, and if so, it means that I was vague, and therefore misinterpreted, in my suggestion.  So, I want to make my suggestion clear, just in case:

I'm not saying shorten the length of time that messages stay up.

I'm saying shorten the length of characters in a message's display, so that both a message line and the "Idlers" section can be displayed simultaneously.

So something like:

code:

"Doren Limultat has engraved [MORE] Idlers: 2"

Which would roll over, a second later (or however long "[MORE]" currently takes to roll to the next line) to something like:

code:

"a masterpiece!                     Idlers: 2"

I th

Again, sorry if I'm misunderstanding.

And that wasn't the best example, since "Doren Limultat has engraved a masterpiece!" can easily fit on a single line even with "Idlers" displayed:

code:

Doren Limultat has engraved a masterpiece!   Idlers: 2

In fact, I would think that a whole lot of current messages could fit even with "Idlers" displayed.

And even more could be fit on a single line if the game used "Idle" instead of "Idlers", for example.

Incidentally, for those interested in the saga:

Doren Limultat is currently serving a sentence in jail for murder.

I'm not sure, but I think this was brought on by some mud that spilled on one of his eight billion masterpiece sections of floor.

Most murderers are ripped apart in my fortress. Didn't know you could get jailed for it.

He's my first murderer, so I'm not sure, but perhaps it has something to do with the fact that he murdered a cat, not a dwarf.

It's still listed as "murder", and he got a huge jail sentence for it.

Putting the Idlers in a top corner could work too.  Or leaving idlers where it is and putting the message bar along the top.  If idlers and messages weren't in the same row then there wouldn't be a problem.

What was the sentence?

When my dudes murder/go berserk, their icon changes and when they die it's not reported (Like when outsiders die).

Something like 250 days.

He previously had assaulted a bunch of dwarves, including a mangled (red) arm that has put one of them on bedrest indefinitely; he always got about 20 days or so for such things.

And even when he's not in jail, or abusing some innocent, he's always throwing a tantrum, never working.

This particularly sucks because he was intended as my main farmer - the engraving stuff was just done in the winter to make him get more agile (to cut down on time spent walking to and from seed barrels).

I guess the moral is: When your farmer/engraver "engraves a masterpiece!", turn off his stone detailing job immediately.  My whole fortress is covered with these things.
