Can I check for magma after Ive started?
« on: May 04, 2009, 07:55:20 am »

Well, I've started a new fortress, i'm fairly certain that I ticked " magma pipe" as a requirement when I looked for this site, but after excavating 10 or so levels below the ground and not finding one i'm not so certain. So is there a way to check for one?

Thanks

I use 3Dwarf with hidden tiles enabled to find features like that. It lets you get a good look at the general area but you still have to poke around a bit in game. Also avoids screwing up your save like reveal does.

Does the thing with the depot still work?

@Puck: Think of it as playing hard mode, without cheats  ;D

The method I used ... Start game. Backup the save folder. Run the game and reveal.exe (found it on the Wiki). Make notes on paper ("where are teh irons?") + save a couple of screenshots so I'd find the magma pool again. Quit, restore save game.

(I did not know the much faster Depot method ... oh well I'll try that after the next release.)

I'm not sure I would call one drill site, a few levels down, in the middle of each area block "hard".

Or, just go back to a clean copy of your world folder (you saved one, right?) and re-find the same location (you made notes, right?).  NM - you made a couple notes about the map before you embarked, where everything was... right?

Shouldn't have to go more than maybe 6 levels down, usually half that at most.  Magma is large, a rough circle about 20-25 tiles in diameter, and it has to be completely within the area block.  Big easy target, esp if you include the obsidian that's around it, so it's hard to miss if you drill the center of each block.
