[HFS] framerate...
« on: May 03, 2009, 03:47:02 pm »

Is it normal for the framerate to crash down to 1 or 2 when the demon pits are discovered? As far as I can tell there are only 2 demons so far. Not sure what's eating the FPS.

its normal. i once had 6 pages of elves crashing out to my bottomless pit were everyone jumped in.

it can be MANY demons in there that are going to youre dwarves but you cant see them till they get detected.

The various depressed slaves are a known cause of dps drain, as are all the other demons that  are still in hiding.

The demons keep trying to find a path to the surface. If you completely cut off paths to the surface they'll stop, at least mostly.

Fortifications don't stop it but I think locked doors and walls will.

The demons being hidden isn't the problem. It's either the suicidal nutcases or pathfinding issues, which I don't think would be that extreme, considering 200 dwarves only knocks down this computer's FPS to 30, even though it was built when Doom 3 was the big thing.

Meanwhile, the newer "I can run Crysis with high settings" computer has the same struggle when the demonic hellspawn come out to play.

And it makes HFS really, really not worth touching, unfortunately.

Eh, it's only not worth touching if you plan to wall them up and wait, if you plan to wipe them out then it's not so bad.
Also, I hear ambushing creatures take MUCH more resources than regular creatures.

So if I pump a load of water into the top of the HFS, will it drown the bastards or just get them slightly miffed?

None of them can drown (spirits of fire technically can I think but they vaporize all water several tiles away so...)

Your best option is to cave in the whole area, I think it instantly kills all of them if you collapse an area thats bigger than the whole pit the demons are on. If you dont mind being cheap you could always edit their body temperatures and make them die that way.

Tentacle demons can drown, and maybe if you could trap the plain "Demon" creatures in a water-filled cavern they'd drown (ordinarily they can fly out of any water supply). Toad demons of course can swim, and spirits of fire evaporate water long before it gets to them.

Likewise, demons and spirits of fire are magma-immune.

I like the cave-in idea. Sounds like an engineering disaster just WAITING to happen :D

I used a program to force the demons out of ambush mode, and my FPS was still terrible.

Kinda related, but this is my first ever HFS. Caravans stopped coming to my fortress early on in its life after they got massacred by a "Vile force of darkness". The end result is that although my fortress is flourishing, migrants stopped coming. This was all a couple of years before finding the HFS and the surrounding adamantine.
Will the King still make an appearance if no-one's reporting back to civilisation how successful my fort is?

That was a siege by goblins. You should be fine, caravans never stop coming really.
